The mushroom fair of Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid
The mushroom fair takes over the village on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November. Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid sits at 1,126 metres, on the edge of Haute-Loire and Ardèche, counts starred restaurants and expects up to 20,000 visitors over the two days, from 7:30 am to 7 pm. Entry is free.
About forty professional dealers set up from 7:30 am in the streets and squares of the village, selling antiques, old crockery, collectibles and tools until 7 pm.
The dried mushroom market is the heart of the fair. Porcini, chanterelles and black trumpets pass from one stall to the next, run by local and regional producers.
A mycology exhibition offers workshops. The village chefs give cooking demonstrations, and the starred restaurants serve menus built around mushrooms.
The local produce has its own market. Cheeses, charcuterie, honey and jams from neighbouring Ardèche line the stalls, and restaurateurs offer special deals for the occasion.
