Every 2nd Sunday of the month, the Place du Foiral in Privas transforms into a lively and accessible flea market. Organized by the Mairie de Privas, this monthly event brings together about forty exhibitors—individuals looking to clear out their attics and seasoned flea market professionals—offering a wide range of items: old tableware, family furniture, trinkets, books, vintage clothing, tools, vinyl records, toys, and all sorts of unusual finds.
The market opens its doors to visitors from 8 am and continues until 6 pm, offering opportunities to browse, negotiate, and find that rare gem all day long. Exhibitor registration is done directly on-site, without prior reservation, for a fixed fee of 10 euros per spot. Entry is completely free for visitors. The market takes place all year round, regardless of the season.
The Place du Foiral is one of Privas's central squares, ideally located in the city center of the Ardèche prefecture. This traditional gathering place regularly hosts markets and popular events, continuing a long tradition of commercial and social life. The monthly flea market fits in naturally here, benefiting from its central location to attract both residents from nearby neighborhoods and visitors from all over Central Ardèche.
Just a short walk from the square are Privas's main monuments and shops: the town hall, the shopping streets, the cafes and restaurants of the center, inviting visitors to extend their morning of bargain hunting with a stroll through the city.
Privas is the prefecture of the Ardèche department, nestled in a green basin at the confluence of several valleys, about 25 kilometers southwest of Valence. With nearly 8,500 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest prefectures in France, giving it an intimate and endearing character that its residents particularly cherish.
The town is famous throughout the region for being the capital of the candied chestnut: the chestnut trees covering the surrounding Ardèche slopes have provided the raw material for an exceptional confectionery for centuries. The tradition of processing chestnuts—into puree, cream, or candied chestnuts—is inseparable from Privas's identity.
Privas has a particularly eventful history. In the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation took deep root there, among the population as well as the nobility. The town was the scene of the dramatic Siege of Privas in 1629, during the Wars of Religion: besieged by the royal troops of Louis XIII, Privas was stormed and largely destroyed by fire and cannons. The town remained a wasteland for several years before gradually rebuilding.
During the French Revolution, Privas became the prefecture of the new Ardèche department, corresponding to the former province of Vivarais. Its historic center preserves beautiful architectural testimonies: the Saint-Thomas church, the Recollets convent, the 15th-century Tour de Diane de Poitiers in Renaissance style, and numerous private mansions. A marked historical trail invites visitors to discover this heritage on foot.
Despite its modest size, Privas is a well-equipped and dynamic city. It has a museum, a theater, a cinema, a media library, and two swimming pools, offering its residents a remarkable quality of life. The Mairie de Privas, organizer of the monthly flea market, is committed to animating the city center and preserving popular traditions that strengthen social bonds. The flea market is one of these initiatives that, Sunday after Sunday, helps to keep the heart of the prefecture alive.
Whether you are a passionate collector, an occasional bargain hunter, or simply a Sunday stroller, the Privas Flea Market has something to offer everyone. Lovers of antiques mingle with fans of second-hand goods, while families find toys, books, and souvenirs at affordable prices. Free entry and easy accessibility make it a popular and unpretentious event, true to the friendly spirit that characterizes life in Ardèche.
