Solstice weekend: eleven flea markets to hunt across France on June 20-21

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the 1,400 metres of the Miches sale in Montbeliard to the antique dealers of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, eleven hunting picks across eight regions for the June 20-21 weekend.

The weekend of June 20-21 lands on the solstice, the Fete de la Musique and Saint John's Day: in other words, the whole of France is clearing out its attics. Third Sunday of the month, the longest days of the year, the first real summer heat — festivities committees, sports clubs and antiques markets are all running at full tilt. I have combed through our regional weekend picks to pull out eleven events worth the trip, from the Cotentin to the Brianconnais. The point isn't to see everything but to aim well: a giant 1,400-metre sale, an antiques market of world renown, a meteorite fair, hunting facing the Vauban forts, listed hilltop villages. To each their own hunting ground, to each their own route.

Grand Miches Flea Market in Montbeliard, the weekend's giant sale (Burgundy-Franche-Comte)

Sunday June 21, the Grand Miches Flea Market lays out at Parc des Miches the largest sale in the region: 1,400 metres of stalls, between 200 and 300 professional and private sellers, and thousands of visitors. Every third Sunday of June, the Commune Libre de la Citadelle turns the park and surrounding streets into a maze of stalls where you can easily spend the morning without seeing it all. The sheer scale guarantees variety: genuine antique furniture and one-euro odds-and-ends sit side by side. It is the weekend's must-see for hunters who love volume. Arrive early, before the dealers have picked it clean, and bring good shoes: you won't get round it in an hour.

Samoreau Spring Flea Market, 350 sellers on the banks of the Seine (Paris region)

Sunday June 21, the Samoreau Spring Flea Market takes over the Parc Saint-Aubin, on the banks of the Seine, a stone's throw from Fontainebleau. Run by the town hall, it gathers around 350 sellers, making it one of the biggest hunting events in Seine-et-Marne and my Paris-region favourite of the weekend. Private sellers and dealers rub shoulders in a leafy, wooded setting that makes a change from suburban car parks: furniture, crockery, clothes, toys, books and bric-a-brac as far as the eye can see. The nearby chateau de Fontainebleau and its forest make for an easy day-long outing, between hunting and strolling. Free entry for visitors. A great spring classic to tackle with the morning ahead of you.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Sunday brocante market, the antiques capital (Provence-French Riviera)

Sunday June 21, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue rolls out, as it does every week, its famous brocante market along the banks and canals, from 9am to 6pm. Dozens of professional antique dealers set up their pieces at the foot of the water wheels: antique furniture, earthenware, silverware, household linen and paintings. Europe's third antiques hub behind London and Saint-Ouen, the Vaucluse town favours fine hunting, vetted by professionals, over the family yard sale. It is the place to aim for if you want the piece of character rather than the €2 trinket. The setting, between paddle wheels and the rushing waters of the Sorgue, is part of the pleasure. Arrive early and wander: the morning slips away fast in this Provencal maze.

Le Pertuis Flea Market, 250 stalls on the Velay plateau (Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes)

Sunday June 21, the lorry car park of Le Pertuis village hosts one of the largest flea markets in Haute-Loire. Every third Sunday of June, nearly 250 sellers set up from 5am for this event run by the local parents' association. Private sellers and professionals rub shoulders until 5pm, and the sheer size of the spread justifies the trip up onto the Velay plateau on its own. At this scale you come for the whole day, not a quick stop: the range of goods, from furniture to bric-a-brac, changes from one aisle to the next. See the Le Pertuis flea market, a big annual Auvergne fixture for early-rising hunters who like to dig through volume.

43rd Javarzay Flea Market at Chef-Boutonne, hunting below a Renaissance chateau (New Aquitaine)

Sunday June 21, the Football Club Boutonnais stages the 43rd edition of the Javarzay Flea Market and Yard Sale, in the grounds of the Renaissance chateau of Javarzay, at Chef-Boutonne. More than three hundred sellers, private and professional, take over this exceptional lakeside setting, making it one of the biggest hunting gatherings in the southern Deux-Sevres. Free entry for visitors. With forty-three editions on the clock and a listed heritage backdrop, it is a sure bet on the regional calendar. The volume guarantees a varied offer, from old furniture to knick-knacks via vinyl and attic bric-a-brac. Plan the full day: you don't get round three hundred stalls in an hour.

Ensisheim Meteorite and Mineral Fair, hunting for stones fallen from the sky (Grand Est)

Here is the weekend's most singular gem. The Ensisheim meteorite and mineral fair takes place on Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21, on Place de l'Eglise, in the only town in the world to preserve a meteorite that fell in 1492. This indoor show gathers collectors and dealers from across Europe: authentic meteorites, rough and cut minerals, rare fossils, crystals and semi-precious stones change hands in an enthusiasts' atmosphere. It is a one-of-a-kind event in Alsace, halfway between a specialist brocante and a science fair. Even if you do not leave with a fragment of space, the display cases alone are worth the trip, and the theme will delight curious minds young and old. A hunt that breaks resolutely from the ordinary.

Lautrec Flea Market, hunting in one of France's Most Beautiful Villages (Occitania)

Sunday June 21, the medieval village of Lautrec, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and capital of pink garlic, hosts its big annual flea market. Around 150 sellers set up in the cobbled lanes and around the covered market, for a hunting day that epitomises the Pays de Cocagne. The setting makes all the difference: you wander between half-timbered houses, the hilltop windmill and producers' stalls, with hunting blending into the flavours of the Tarn countryside. An event where the find comes with a real heritage stroll, a few kilometres from Castres. Free entry. Ideal for those who want to pair a village brocante with the discovery of one of the loveliest towns in the South-West.

La Hougue vide-greniers at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, hunting facing the Vauban forts (Normandy)

Sunday June 21, the festival committee opens the summer season of the La Hougue vide-greniers, on the harbour esplanade of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. The setting is exceptional: you hunt facing the sea, with a view of the Vauban forts listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in one of the most charming oyster ports of the Val de Saire. The first of three summer dates, this vide-grenier gathers residents and holidaymakers laying out furniture, tableware, clothing and objects of every kind. The maritime atmosphere and the Cotentin light are the heart of the morning. Combine with an oyster tasting at the harbour and a walk to the fort de la Hougue, a listed historic monument.

Aups Flea Market, hunting in the truffle capital (Provence-French Riviera)

Sunday June 21, the Aups flea market returns to the place de la Mairie for its June edition. Under the century-old plane trees of this fine Haut-Var square, hunters and sellers gather for a morning of unpacking in the Var capital of the black truffle. It is a regular and well-loved stop on the Provencal dealers' circuit. Aups, a large hilltop town at the gateway to the Verdon gorges, offers an authentic Provencal village setting, far from the crush of the coast. You hunt here for furniture, crockery and knick-knacks before strolling the shaded lanes and pushing on to the Sainte-Croix lake. Village-square flea market format, easy-going atmosphere: perfect for opening summer on the hinterland side.

Foire a la Trouvaille of La Garde-Adhemar, the most photogenic hunt (Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes)

Sunday June 21, the Foire a la Trouvaille is held in La Garde-Adhemar, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Perched on its rocky spur overlooking the Tricastin plains, the village offers an unrivalled architectural and scenic backdrop for this annual flea market and yard sale. Between the 12th-century Romanesque collegiate church and the views over the Rhone valley, hunting here takes on a special flavour: you come as much for the setting as for the objects. For anyone who likes to pair brocante with heritage, it is the most photogenic stop of the weekend in the Drome Provencale. Combine it with a visit to the village and its aromatic-herb garden.

Souillac Grand Yard Sale, the Lot's summer sale (Occitania)

Sunday June 21, the Georges Pivaudran sports ground in Souillac, on route de Sarlat, hosts the town's big yard sale. Around sixty private sellers lay out clothing, household items, toys, books and small furniture in one of the liveliest towns of the touristy Lot, between the Dordogne and the Quercy causses. Free entry for visitors. The wide, easily reached site makes it an ideal base for a morning of hunting before heading off to the nearby sites of the Dordogne valley. Note that the Souillac Tennis Club holds its own yard sale on the same day at the games field, so you can keep finding bargains without leaving town. A real summer favourite of the South-West.
