A horse fair below the castle of Chabenet
The horse fair and flea market of Le Pont-Chrétien-Chabenet celebrates its 20th edition on Sunday 1 November, on the place de Verdun. From 6:30 am, sellers set up on the fairground with furniture, crockery, trinkets, tools, toys, clothes and books. Flea market and car boot stalls fill the square.
The horse fair keeps its place beside the stalls. It carries on a centuries-old tradition of horse trading in the Berry.
In the village hall, a craft exhibition gathers paintings, sculptures, art crafts and local creations, from 9 am to 6 pm.
The village lies in the Creuse valley, and the castle of Chabenet overlooks it from above the river. Listed as a historic monument since 1927, it was built from 1465 for Josselin du Bois, with fourteen towers at the start. A Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion, it was partly dismantled on Richelieu's orders in 1635, then restored in the 19th century on Viollet-le-Duc's advice.
The festival committee organises the day with the town council. Free entry, food on site.
