Place Saint-Nicolas, 300 metres facing the sea
The Sunday brocante on Place Saint-Nicolas opens on Sunday, October 18 from 7am to 1pm, in Bastia. Around thirty exhibitors, dealers and private sellers alike, set out their goods facing the sea.
The square is 300 metres long and 90 wide. Avenues of plane trees and palms line it, and the statue of Napoleon dressed as a Roman Caesar gives strollers a landmark.
On the stalls: antique furniture, tableware and porcelain, silverware, collectable books and magazines, trinkets, vintage clothes, tools and historical documents linked to the island. Old postcards of Corsica are well represented.
Terrace cafés, a newspaper kiosk, morning games of boules. The square is lived in all year. The port is a five-minute walk away.
Bastia, founded by the Genoese in the 14th century around its citadel, is the largest city in Corsica, with nearly 45,000 inhabitants, and remains the island's main port, linked by regular sailings to the mainland. The square is the starting point for many tours of the city. The old centre has the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Baroque oratories and the palace of the Genoese governors.
