Annual car boot sale in the mining village of Cadolive, at the foot of Mont Julien between Gardanne and La Destrousse
The Vide-Grenier de Cadolive is an annual event much appreciated by the inhabitants of this small Provençal village in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Organized by the Comité des Fêtes, this event brings together up to 200 private exhibitors in the shaded alleys of this village of 2,000 souls, a former village in the Provence mining basin. Cadolive, nestled on terraces at the foot of Mont Julien in the chaîne de l'Étoile, offers a picturesque and authentic setting for a day of bargain hunting in the open air. Entry is free for visitors, and the friendly atmosphere reflects the spirit of solidarity inherited from the village's mining tradition.
Each year, the small village of Cadolive hosts its annual car boot sale on the Place de la Mairie and in the adjacent streets. Organized by the Comité des Fêtes de Cadolive, this popular event brings together up to 200 private exhibitors who come to clear out their cellars, attics, and closets in the heart of this Provençal village in the Huveaune valley. Bargain hunters can find a wide variety of items at low prices in a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
Cadolive is a typically Provençal village with shaded squares and narrow streets lined with houses topped with terracotta-colored round tiles. Located between Gardanne and La Destrousse, halfway between Aix-en-Provence and Aubagne, the village is built on terraces at the foot of Mont Julien, in the chaîne de l'Étoile. Its name comes from "Enco d'Olive" ("Olive's Place"), referring to the Ollive family who lived there in the 18th century. Separated from Saint-Savournin in 1900, Cadolive retains a strong identity, forged by two centuries of mining in the Provence coal basin.
The village has inherited several remarkable vestiges from its mining past. The old washhouse, built in 1894, testifies to the daily life of mining families at the end of the 19th century. The lime kilns ("chaufours") recall the industrial activity that animated the commune. The monumental town hall, built in 1902 at the expense of Albert Armand, owner of the Valdonne mines and first mayor of the commune, overlooks the village square. The Saint-Lazare church (1851), with its characteristic bell tower, completes this built heritage. The Puits Armand, opened in 1891 in the neighboring commune of Peypin, was intensely active before its definitive closure in 1954.
The stalls at the Cadolive car boot sale offer a wide variety of items typical of Provençal car boot sales: crockery and ceramics, clothing and accessories, toys and board games, books and comics, knick-knacks and decorative objects, small furniture, gardening tools, and collectible items. Prices are negotiable and often very attractive, delighting both seasoned bargain hunters and occasional strollers.
The Cadolive car boot sale is part of the tradition of popular events that punctuate the life of small Provençal villages. Organized by the Comité des Fêtes, it contributes to the social bond between the approximately 2,000 inhabitants of Cadolive and those of neighboring communes: Peypin, La Destrousse, La Bouilladisse, Saint-Savournin, and Gardanne. Registration is mandatory for exhibitors, and the event takes place in a family atmosphere inherited from the spirit of solidarity of the mining world.
The natural setting of Cadolive invites visitors to extend their stay beyond the car boot sale. The village is an ideal starting point for hikes in the chaîne de l'Étoile and towards the Baou de l'Aigle, which offers an exceptional panorama of the Aix-en-Provence basin and Montagne Sainte-Victoire. Heritage enthusiasts can discover the ancient Grottes des Fées et des Voleurs (Fairies' and Thieves' Caves), remarkable geological vestiges of the limestone massif. The olive groves dotting the surrounding hills recall the agricultural vocation of this Provençal terroir.
The Vide-Grenier de Cadolive will be held on Sunday, June 1st, 2026, in the Place de la Mairie, in the heart of this Provençal village in the mining basin between Gardanne and La Destrousse. Up to 200 private exhibitors, free entry.
