Car boot sale in the heart of an old Provençal mining village between Gardanne and Trets
The Vide-Grenier de Gréasque is a popular event organized by the Syndicat d'Initiative de Gréasque on the college esplanade, in the heart of this commune of 4,500 inhabitants nestled between Gardanne and Trets in the Bouches-du-Rhône. A former mining village marked by coal mining, Gréasque preserves a remarkable industrial heritage with the Puits Hély d'Oissel and its 25.5-meter metal headframe, classified as an industrial historic monument. The Syndicat d'Initiative, created in 1992 and housed in the former mine station, organizes two car boot sales per year, in spring and autumn, remaining true to the convivial tradition of this Provençal village located 20 kilometers northeast of Marseille.
Each year, the Syndicat d'Initiative de Gréasque organizes its spring car boot sale on the college esplanade, an open space in the center of the village. This event brings together private sellers and bargain hunters in a family-friendly and convivial atmosphere, typical of Provençal village car boot sales. The stalls offer everyday items, clothing, books, toys, tableware, trinkets, and small furniture at modest prices, giving everyone the opportunity to find a good deal under the Bouches-du-Rhône sun.
Perched at an altitude of 331 meters between Gardanne and Trets, Gréasque is a distinctive commune whose history is intimately linked to the coal mining in the Provence mining basin. The Puits Hély d'Oissel, drilled from 1912 and operated from 1919 to 1962, reached a depth of 455 meters. Its 25.5-meter metal headframe, built in 1917 by the Derobert company, has been listed as an inventory of industrial historic monuments since 1990. During the 1950s, this shaft won the productivity prize in France three consecutive years, testifying to the intensity of local mining activity.
Since November 2000, the Puits Hély d'Oissel site has housed the Gréasque Mining Museum, which retraces the history of coal mining in Provence. Visitors can discover the working conditions of the miners, the daily lives of the women and children of the mine, the evolution of lamps and tools with mechanization, as well as old and contemporary safety systems. A 13.4-kilometer hiking trail also allows exploration of the 19th-century mining remains in the Forêt des Euves, within the municipal territory.
The Syndicat d'Initiative de Gréasque, founded in 1992, is located in the former mine station, at 1 boulevard Marius Ollive. It organizes events throughout the year that mark the local life: the Saint-Jean bonfires, the Christmas market, the "Nature & Sens" forum, and the "Jazz en sol mineur" festival. The two annual car boot sales, in spring and autumn, are privileged moments in the village life where residents and visitors meet to hunt for treasures, exchange, and share in a relaxed atmosphere.
Before or after the car boot sale, a visit to the Mining Museum is a must to understand the soul of this village. The streets of Gréasque, the views of the Provençal hills, and the proximity to Gardanne, Cézanne's town, and Trets, the gateway to Sainte-Victoire, allow for an extended day. The commune belongs to the Metropolis of Aix-Marseille-Provence and is only 20 kilometers from Marseille, offering easy access from the major cities of the department.
