About Vide-Grenier Peypin

The Vide-Grenier de Peypin is an annual event highly appreciated by bargain hunters from the Bouches-du-Rhône region. Organized on the Place du Tilleul, in the center of this Provençal village nestled between the wooded hills of the Regagnas massif and the northern foothills of the Allauch massif, this event brings together individuals and families for a friendly day of treasure hunting. Peypin, a former commune in the Valdonne mining basin where lignite was extracted for centuries, offers an authentic setting amidst pine forests, streams, and historical heritage, halfway between Aubagne and Gardanne.

The Vide-Grenier de Peypin: Treasure Hunting in the Heart of a Historic Provençal Village

Each year, the commune of Peypin hosts its car boot sale on the Place du Tilleul, a central square in the village lined by the Avenue de Valdonne. This popular event brings together residents of Peypin and neighboring communes — La Destrousse, Cadolive, La Bouilladisse, Belcodène, and Roquevaire — for the pleasure of hunting for bargains and sharing. Private sellers offer the contents of their cellars and attics, much to the delight of bargain hunters.

A Village Between Wooded Hills and Mining Heritage

Perched between 216 and 628 meters above sea level, Peypin occupies a hilly territory at the northern tip of the Allauch massif and west of the Regagnas mountain, whose Pirascas summit reaches 628 meters. The landscape is marked by pine forests and streams that crisscross the hills. The village is deeply connected to the history of the Provence mining basin: the Valdonne mines, exploited since the 13th century, have shaped the commune's identity for centuries. Lignite extraction fueled the local economy and fostered a pioneering social movement, with the birth of the first union in 1861 and the first mining relief funds in 1864.

Remarkable Historical Heritage

Beyond its mining legacy, Peypin preserves notable historical vestiges. The Oppidum de la Cride, with its triple rampart, testifies to a very ancient occupation of the site. The significant remains of the medieval castle, built in the 12th century by Pierre Brémond, lord of Auriol, recall the strategic importance of the location. A commemorative stele erected in 2005 at the Puits Castellane, on the road to Gréasque, pays tribute to the miners of Valdonne. The commune was also the birthplace of Félix Gouin, president of the Provisional Government of the French Republic in 1946.

Finds for Every Taste

As in the best Provençal car boot sales, the stalls on the Place du Tilleul offer a wide variety of items: crockery and ceramics, books and comics, clothing and accessories, toys and board games, knick-knacks and decorative objects, small furniture, and gardening tools. Bargain hunters appreciate the relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere of this event, where prices are negotiable and exchanges are warm.

A Natural Setting Conducive to Strolling

Peypin's geographical location, between Aubagne to the south and Gardanne to the north, makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the hinterland of Marseille. Hiking enthusiasts can take the trails that wind through the surrounding hills, between pine forests and scrubland, in a typically Provençal landscape. The car boot sale on the Place du Tilleul thus offers an opportunity to combine the pleasure of treasure hunting with the discovery of an authentic village, far from the hustle and bustle of the nearby big cities.

How to Participate

To exhibit at the Peypin car boot sale, individuals can inquire with the town hall or the organizing association. The Place du Tilleul parking lot, with about fifty spaces, provides easy access to the site. Entry is free for visitors. It is advisable to arrive early in the morning to find the best bargains.
