Back-to-school flea market in the village of George Sand, classified as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages
The brocante of Gargilesse-Dampierre is held every early September in this village classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. In the heart of the Creuse valley, exhibitors take over the picturesque alleys of the town to offer old objects, trinkets, and finds to passing bargain hunters.
In early September, Gargilesse-Dampierre hosts its annual flea market in the alleys of this village classified as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages. Distinct from the August flea market at Les Girauds, this event takes place in the village center itself, at the foot of the castle and around the Romanesque church. Exhibitors offer antique objects, furniture, tableware, trinkets, books, prints, and curiosities in a setting of rare beauty, between stone houses and terraced gardens overlooking the valley.
Gargilesse-Dampierre is an exceptional heritage gem. The 11th-century castle dominates the village from its rocky spur, while the Notre-Dame church preserves finely crafted Romanesque frescoes and capitals. George Sand's house, where the novelist liked to retreat to write, is open to the public. Impressionist painters—led by Claude Monet—immortalized the landscapes of this valley with its changing light. The village today has several artist studios and galleries.
The Gargilesse flea market is the perfect opportunity to combine bargain hunting with heritage discovery. The intimate format of the village offers an authentic flea market experience, far from large, impersonal events. Admission is free.
The Gargilesse-Dampierre flea market returns on September 6, 2026, to the alleys of this Most Beautiful Village of France. Free admission.
