Fair of old books and old papers in the village of George Sand, Most Beautiful Village of France
The Gargilesse-Dampierre book and old papers fair is a major cultural event in the Indre department. For two days in September, around 50 exhibitors specializing in old books, rare editions, prints, engravings, postcards, manuscripts, period newspapers, and old papers of all kinds will set up in the alleys and squares of this village classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Bibliophiles, collectors, and the curious come from all over the region to rummage through the boxes and find the rare gem.
Organizing a book fair in Gargilesse has a special meaning: the novelist George Sand made this village her creative refuge, writing several of her novels there. Her house, now a museum, overlooks the valley and testifies to this deep attachment. The village perpetuates this literary and artistic tradition with artists' workshops, galleries, and this book fair that celebrates written heritage. The architectural setting—medieval castle, Romanesque church, stone houses—adds to the magic of the event.
The two-day format allows visitors to take their time to methodically search the stalls, chat with specialized booksellers, and enjoy the village. Admission is free. Enthusiasts can combine their visit with a discovery of George Sand's house and a walk in the gorges of the Gargilesse.
