This weekend of 25 and 26 July, Occitania has plenty on offer for hunters willing to skip the mall parking lots. Two medieval bastides mark milestone editions of their antiques fairs. The Quercy, meanwhile, is bursting with votive feasts and their improvised car-boot sales. Fancy a hunt that smells of village fete rather than supermarket tarmac? Today's pick steers clear of the big permanent city markets on purpose.
The route starts in the Ariège's capital, where the yearly flea market sets up below the county castle. It crosses two royal bastides, one in the Hautes-Pyrenees, the other in the Aveyron. It ends in the Lot, where six different villages hold their car-boot sale on the very same Sunday.
Two antiques fairs celebrate their staying power
Our favourite this weekend is the Trie-sur-Baïse Antiques Fair. Its 49th edition keeps a rare promise: the same association has run it since 1978, in a bastide founded in 1323. We also love the annual Foix fair, which gathers around forty professional dealers under the gaze of the county castle's three towers.
In between: a centuries-old Aveyron patronal feast, a traditional-music festival in the Hautes-Pyrenees, and a handful of Quercy votive feasts. Plenty of ground covered, without any stop repeating the last.
On 25 and 26 July, the royal bastide of Trie-sur-Baïse, founded in 1323 by Jean de Trie, hosts its Antiques, Collections and Flea Market Fair. The Antrie'Quités association has run the event since 1978: 2026 marks its 49th edition.
The fair spreads across the Grande Halle and the central square of this former royal town. Professional antique dealers indoors, flea-market sellers outdoors: two moods for one day of hunting, in a Gascon bastide setting that has changed little in seven centuries.
Until Sunday 26 July, the Ariège's capital hosts its annual antiques and flea-market fair, on the Allées de Villote and under the Halle aux Grains. Around forty professional sellers set up from 9am to 7pm, Saturday and Sunday alike.
The backdrop has real character: the county castle's three towers loom over town from their rocky spur. Old furniture, tableware and collectibles change hands all day, a short walk from the upper town's shopping streets.
On Saturday 25 July, the association Sauveterre Initiatives runs the traditional car-boot sale for the Saint-Christophe feast, on Place des Arcades. This royal bastide was founded in 1281 by seneschal Guillaume de Mâcon, on behalf of King Philip III the Bold.
The stone arcades that give the square its name host both hunters and sellers for a day mixing heritage and village celebration. A chance to see one of the Aveyron's best-preserved bastides, away from the bigger professional fairs.
On Sunday 26 July, the Capdenac festivities committee runs the traditional flea market of Capdenac-le-Haut. This medieval town, perched on a rocky spur above the Lot river, welcomes sellers and visitors from 8am to 5pm.
Free entry, food on site: it is a faithful yearly date on the Quercy summer calendar. The view over the valley from the ramparts is worth the trip on its own, hunting or not.
Until Sunday 26 July, the votive feast of Masclat animates Place du Foirail. Its night-time car-boot sale, from 6pm to 10pm, gathers around a hundred sellers keen to hunt in the cool evening air rather than under the midday sun.
Food stalls and summer entertainment round out the programme in this Quercy village. The routine changes here: browsing stalls by evening light, before the feast itself takes over.
On Sunday 26 July, the car-boot sale of Avezac-Prat-Lahitte runs alongside the Rencon'Trad festival, between Lannemezan and Bagnères-de-Bigorre. This village of 350 people has celebrated Occitan and international traditional music and dance for more than 25 years.
Concerts and dances fill the day while sellers set up close by. A rare pairing of hunting and living folk culture, far from the region's bigger festival stages.
On Sunday 26 July, the association Les Joyeux Gabardans runs its summer day at Larroque-Engalin, a small Gascon village in the Gimone valley. The flea market sits at the centre of the programme, alongside live music, games and a communal country meal.
This all-in-one format, blending hunting with village life, captures the spirit of the Gers' smaller communities. People come as much to find an object as to share a meal with neighbours and passing visitors.
On Saturday 25 July, the village of Balaguères holds its annual car-boot sale, in the Ariège's Couserans area. This summer event draws locals and holidaymakers at the foot of the first Pyrenean foothills.
Free entry, an unpretentious village mood: it is a modest but reliable stop, in an area with few other flea markets this particular weekend.
On Sunday 26 July, the wine-growing town of Durban-Corbières holds its annual car-boot sale, on Place du Marché in the town centre. The medieval castle overlooking the village watches over sellers and passing hunters alike.
The mood stays southern and relaxed, between Corbières vineyards and old stone. A characterful stop for anyone extending their holiday between Narbonne and Carcassonne.
On Sunday 26 July, the Club des Bons Vivants of Miers runs its annual car-boot sale and clothes swap, on Place de la Mairie. Setup starts at 7am, under the trees, a short walk from the community hall.
The village sits between two of the Lot's most visited sites: the Rocamadour shrine and the Padirac chasm. A chance to pair a hunting trip with two major Haut-Quercy landmarks.
