Car boot sale and flea market for the Saint-Christophe festival under the medieval arcades of Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, Most Beautiful Village of France
The Saint-Christophe Car boot Sale and Flea Market is an annual event organized by the Sauveterre Initiatives association as part of the Saint-Christophe patronal festival, held on the last Saturday of July. The event takes place on the majestic Place des Arcades in Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, a royal bastide founded in 1281 by seneschal Guillaume de Mâcon for King Philippe III le Hardi. The 47 ogival and semi-circular arcades surrounding the square offer natural shelter to exhibitors and visitors in case of bad weather, in a setting of rare elegance. Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, this medieval village in the Aveyronnais Ségala features half-timbered houses and Renaissance residences around the collegiate church of Saint-Christophe, a 14th-century Gothic gem classified as a Historic Monument. From 8 am to 4 pm, individuals and professionals offer antique tableware, trinkets, books, furniture, clothing, and collectibles. Entry is free for visitors, and dining is available in the village, including a restaurant with a Michelin star.
Every last Saturday of July, the Sauveterre Initiatives association organizes a car boot sale and flea market on the Place des Arcades in Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, on the occasion of the Saint-Christophe patronal festival. Stalls are set up under the arcades and in the central square of this 13th-century royal bastide, offering bargain hunters an exceptional setting that few flea markets in France can rival. The 47 arcades, bordered by half-timbered houses and Renaissance residences, form a monumental backdrop for leisurely strolls among stalls laden with everyday treasures.
Founded in 1281 by Guillaume de Mâcon, seneschal of Rouergue, on behalf of King Philippe III le Hardi, Sauveterre-de-Rouergue is a bastide with a regular layout organized around its central arcaded square. The village, perched in the green valleys of the Aveyronnais Ségala, has preserved its medieval heritage intact: the two fortified gates that still guard the entrance to the town, the remains of the moat that once surrounded it, and the half-timbered facades lining the cobbled streets. Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Sauveterre is also a Center for Crafts where ceramists, glassblowers, engravers, luthiers, and cabinetmakers perpetuate excellent craftsmanship in the village workshops.
At the heart of the bastide stands the Saint-Christophe Collegiate Church, a 14th-century Gothic building classified as a Historic Monument since 1999. This church of sober majesty houses remarkable 16th and 18th-century furnishings, including a carved altarpiece and armorial bearings testifying to the artistic refinement of the era. The Saint-Christophe festival, which gives its name to the flea market, celebrates the patron saint of the collegiate church and the village. Visitors coming to hunt for bargains in the square can extend their stroll by discovering this religious building and the rich built heritage that surrounds it.
The originality of this flea market lies in its location under the arcades of the Place des Arcades. These covered galleries, characteristic of the medieval bastides of the Southwest, protect exhibitors and visitors from the summer sun and potential rain showers. The stalls offer the typical diversity of rural car boot sales: antique tableware and earthenware, trinkets and decorative objects, books and magazines, clothing and accessories, toys, tools, small furniture, and collectibles. The event is open to both individuals and professionals, and the friendly atmosphere invites you to take your time discovering treasures.
The Saint-Christophe Car boot Sale and Flea Market welcomes visitors from 8 am to 4 pm, with free entry. Exhibitor setup begins at 6:30 am. The exhibitor fee is 3 euros per linear meter with a minimum of 2 meters, with a preferential rate of 2 euros per meter for pre-registrations. Vehicles are not allowed to park in the square during the event, except for people with reduced mobility. Catering is available in the village, which has several establishments including a Michelin-starred restaurant.
