Bargain hunting in one of France's most beautiful bastides
Perched on its promontory overlooking the Vère valley, Castelnau-de-Montmiral is one of the finest Albigensian bastides. Its 13th-century ramparts, arcaded square and old stone houses provide an exceptional setting for the spring flea market organised by the Parents' Association (APE).
The APE of Castelnau-de-Montmiral has been running this flea market for years with one clear aim: funding projects at the local public school. School trips, educational materials, class journeys and equipment all benefit directly from the proceeds.
Under 50 exhibitors, mostly local residents, lay out clothes, children's toys, books, crockery, tools, small furniture, decoration, board games, CDs and DVDs. Gentle prices, negotiation welcome, friendly atmosphere.
Wander the cobbled lanes, discover Place des Arcades, visit the church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption with its remarkable altarpieces, or enjoy lunch at a village restaurant overlooking the Grésigne forest. The Gaillac vineyards are only 10 minutes away.
Starting point at 6 rue du Château, 81140 Castelnau-de-Montmiral. Parking on the village outskirts. Via D964 from Gaillac (15 min) or A68 Gaillac exit.
8am to 5pm for visitors.
