Antiques, artisans and bargain hunting in Castelnau-de-Montmiral bastide
Over three July days, the medieval bastide of Castelnau-de-Montmiral comes alive around the Les Terres Rouges festival. Bargain hunting, strolling, meeting craft designers: on Thursday the village hosts an antique dealers' fair, followed on Friday and Saturday by a craft and designer market - in a village ranked among France's most beautiful villages. Free daytime entry, festive atmosphere and evening concerts.
Ranked among France's Most Beautiful Villages and perched on a rocky spur above the Vère valley, the bastide of Castelnau-de-Montmiral offers a rare setting for a summer flea market. Over the three bright July days of the Les Terres Rouges festival, the paved streets, the arcaded square and the village lanes turn into a vast open-air bargain-hunting ground. Antique dealers and brocanteurs set out their wares amid pink sandstone facades and half-timbered houses, while the festival shifts at nightfall to its big concerts at the Vère-Grésigne leisure centre.
Thursday is traditionally reserved for the antique dealers' and flea market, with items from across the Tarn and Occitanie: antique furniture, Art Deco, folk art, old tools, paintings, ceramics, vintage linen, silverware, curios. On Friday and Saturday, the spotlight moves to craft designers and artisans, with a carefully selected line-up around wood, metal, leather, textile, ceramics and contemporary jewellery. In the streets, street performances, wooden games, farm animals and children's activities keep the day lively.
The festival is free during the day: visitors come to browse, grab a bite under the arcades, enjoy a glass of local Gaillac, wander through the artisans' pop-up workshops, then catch an aperitif concert on the square. In the evening, the festival's main stages host leading names in French chanson, reggae and world music at the leisure centre. The flea market thus becomes the gateway to a full weekend of heritage, Tarn cuisine and music.
Run by the Les Terres Rouges association with support from the commune and local partners, the festival has become one of the Tarn's cultural highlights. For bargain hunters, it's a rare chance to combine quality brocante, discovery of a classified village and an ambitious musical line-up - in an atmosphere that is at once family, friendly and festive.
