About Brocante Car Boot Sale Belcastel

The Brocante and Car Boot Sale of Belcastel is an annual event organized by the Comité des fêtes de Belcastel, in this medieval gem listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. The event unfolds throughout the village, along the banks of the Aveyron and up to the campsite area, offering bargain hunters an exceptional setting dominated by the 11th-century fortress restored by the architect Fernand Pouillon. From 8 am to 6 pm, exhibitors and visitors take over the cobbled alleys and shaded riverbanks, between stone houses with lauze roofs and a 15th-century medieval bridge. Entry is free and the atmosphere is convivial, characteristic of rural Aveyronnais flea markets.

Brocante and Car Boot Sale of Belcastel: Bargain Hunting in a Medieval Setting

Each year, the Comité des fêtes de Belcastel organizes a flea market and car boot sale that transform this exceptional Aveyronnais village into a vast open-air treasure market. The stalls are set up along the Route des Berges de l'Aveyron, through the village alleys and into the municipal campsite area, creating a unique bargain-hunting route. The setting is magnificent: dominated by the imposing silhouette of the medieval castle, the village unfolds its stone houses with lauze roofs down to the banks of the Aveyron, crossed by a magnificent 15th-century arched bridge.

A Village Listed Among the Most Beautiful in France

Belcastel is part of the prestigious network of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, a distinction richly deserved by this medieval town clinging to the rocky spur overlooking the Aveyron river. The fortress, dating back to the 11th century, was in ruins when the famous architect Fernand Pouillon bought it in 1974. Accompanied by a dozen masons, he undertook a monumental seven-year restoration, bringing the fortress back to life and, by extension, the entire village. The castle, open to the public, now hosts contemporary art exhibitions and offers a breathtaking panorama of the valley.

A Bargain Hunt Along the Water

What makes the Belcastel flea market so unique is its location along the banks of the Aveyron. Visitors stroll among the stalls set up by the water, under the shade of the trees lining the river, in a peaceful and bucolic atmosphere. The route starts near the campsite, runs along the river, and leads back up to the heart of the medieval village, offering remarkable views of the castle, the bridge, and the stone facades. The exhibitors, mainly individuals, offer the typical variety of rural car boot sales: old tableware, knick-knacks and decorative objects, books and magazines, clothing and accessories, toys, tools, and small furniture.

The Sainte-Madeleine Church and Medieval Heritage

A visit to the flea market is an opportunity to discover Belcastel's remarkable heritage. The Sainte-Madeleine Church, located on the left bank of the Aveyron, houses an exceptional Stations of the Cross by Casimir Ferrer, a medieval effigy of Alzias de Saunhac—the lord who had the bridge built in the 15th century—and superb statues dating from the 14th to 16th centuries. The Old Bridge itself, with its elegant arches spanning the clear waters of the Aveyron, is a masterpiece of medieval architecture connecting the two banks of the village.
