The annual book fair in the prehistoric village of Aurignac, a major site of Prehistory
The Aurignac Book Fair is an annual event for lovers of reading and second-hand books, organized on May 30th in this historic village of 1,100 inhabitants, famous for its prehistoric cave. Booksellers, individuals, and associations offer novels, comic books, children's books, art books, scientific works, and magazines at low prices. The event takes place in this medieval town in the foothills of the Pyrenees, dominated by the remains of a 13th-century castle.
Every year at the end of May, the village of Aurignac hosts its annual book fair, a must-attend event for bibliophiles and lovers of second-hand reading in the Comminges region. Exhibitors—individuals, booksellers, and associations—offer a wide selection of novels, comic books, children's books, art books, specialized works, CDs, and DVDs at very affordable prices. The 2026 edition is scheduled for May 30th.
Aurignac is world-renowned for the discovery in 1860 by Édouard Lartet of prehistoric remains in its cave, which gave its name to the Aurignacian period, the first culture of the Upper Paleolithic in Europe (approximately 39,000 to 28,000 years BCE). The Aurignacian Museum, inaugurated in 2014 in a contemporary building, houses over 27,000 archaeological artifacts and traces this foundational period of humanity.
The village itself is built on a ridge overlooking the Comminges countryside, with the remains of a 13th-century castle at its summit. Its medieval streets, stone houses, and panoramic views of the Pyrenees make it a prime cultural and heritage destination in Haute-Garonne.
The Aurignac Book Fair is a particularly accessible event: entry is free, and the prices offered allow everyone to leave with great literary finds. The atmosphere is warm and passionate, with discussions between readers and booksellers adding to the charm of this event.
Located 75 km southwest of Toulouse and 25 km from Saint-Gaudens, Aurignac is a beautiful gateway to the central Pyrenees. The book fair is an opportunity to discover this remarkable village and visit the Aurignacian Museum, which retraces the history of our prehistoric ancestors.
Aurignac Book Fair on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in the town center. Books, comics, CDs, DVDs at low prices. Free admission.
