La Roche-Posay (86270), 1,500 inhabitants, welcomes thousands of patients yearly for skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema, burns). Modern spas sit alongside a character-filled old town: medieval keep, Notre-Dame-des-Sablons church, 12th-c. ramparts. The town also has a casino, golf, racetrack and standing hotels.

For visitors from afar, combine with a wellness day: old-town tour, clearance mid-morning, lunch at a local restaurant (Poitou specialties or gourmet), then an afternoon walk by the Creuse, a swim at Chambon, or the Pharmacy and Thermalism Museum. La Roche-Posay is 30 min from Châtellerault and 50 min from Poitiers.

Visiting tips

Rue du Paradis lies in the old town. Central parking is limited: use public car parks (place du 11 Novembre, thermes). Cash, suitable vehicle. Make a full day of it with sightseeing.
