Saint John, summer solstice tradition at Leigné-les-Bois

Leigné-les-Bois is a small commune of about 400 inhabitants in northeast Vienne, between Châtellerault and La Roche-Posay. Every late June, the town hall and local associations run the Saint John's Festival, one of the oldest European popular traditions, celebrated at summer solstice. 2026: Saturday 28 June 2026.

An evening in several stages

The Saint John's Festival follows a proven format blending family activities and traditional moments. Afternoon: children's games Place de l'Église from 2:30pm. Early evening: buffet brings villagers and visitors together, followed by torchlight procession through the streets. Evening climax: Saint John's fire lit at nightfall, millennial symbol of light and summer warmth.

Millennial European tradition

Saint John's fires predate Christian Europe, originally marking summer solstice. Later integrated with the feast of Saint John the Baptist (24 June), they persist in many French regions including rural Vienne. Organisers carefully perpetuate this with contemporary touches (buffet, torchlight) making it a real shared village moment.

Name from historic forest environment. Typical of northern Vienne rural communes: modest but authentic heritage, hilly countryside. Near La Roche-Posay (thermal station for dermatology) and Châtellerault.
