The name Septèmes originates from the presence of the seventh milestone (lapis septimus) on the Roman road connecting Massilia (Marseille) to Aquae Sextiae (Aix-en-Provence). From 13 BC, Emperor Augustus extended the Via Aurelia and placed these milestones along its route. Septèmes is located seven Roman miles from the Old Port, approximately 10.5 kilometers. This transit point, attested since antiquity, gives the commune a rare historical depth, with remains of pre-Roman fortifications on the Oppidum des Mayans and remnants of Roman aqueducts.
