Bargain hunting in front of the castle in the Chevreuse valley
The Dampierre-en-Yvelines flea market is one of the most picturesque in Yvelines: it is held every spring in front of the majestic Dampierre castle and on the half-moon area in front of it. Organized by the Foyer Rural, it brings together private vendors and bargain hunters in an exceptional setting in the heart of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park. An annual rendezvous of incomparable charm.
Few flea markets in France can boast a setting as prestigious as that of Dampierre-en-Yvelines. Every year, the event organized by the Foyer Rural takes place in front of the monumental entrance of Dampierre castle and on the half-moon area that stretches in front of it. This former ducal estate, built in the 17th century by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for the Luynes family, offers an exceptional setting for exhibitors and visitors who come to browse in a village atmosphere.
Dampierre castle, still owned today by the Luynes family, is one of the finest examples of French classical architecture in Île-de-France. Its majestic facade, moats, park designed by Le Nôtre and half-moon planted with lime trees make it a remarkable setting. The village of Dampierre-en-Yvelines, classified among the most charming in the Chevreuse valley, retains old houses, cobbled streets and its famous stud farm. The flea market fits wonderfully into this unique heritage environment.
The Dampierre flea market has long been organized by the local Foyer Rural, an association that animates the cultural and community life of the village. Each edition attracts a good number of exhibitors, mainly residents of Dampierre and neighboring towns, who come to offer everyday items, dishware, clothes, books, toys and sometimes beautiful pieces found in local family homes. The atmosphere is relaxed and country-like, reflecting the village.
The Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park is one of the most beautiful natural sites in Île-de-France. Around Dampierre, bargain hunters can extend their day with a visit to the Madeleine castle in Chevreuse, the Vaux-de-Cernay abbey, Les Mesnuls, or a hike on the many marked trails that criss-cross the region. The nearby Breteuil castle also offers themed visits and a lovely park.
The Dampierre-en-Yvelines flea market cultivates a certain confidentiality: it does not have the notoriety of major urban events but it appeals for its setting, authenticity and atmosphere. For bargain hunters who love exceptional places, it is an experience to live at least once, ideally by combining the morning of bargain hunting with a walk in the valley and lunch in one of the village inns.
