Summer car boot sale at the foot of the Renaissance castle of Bournazel, a jewel of Rouergue
The Vide-Grenier de Bournazel is an unmissable summer event in the Pays Rignacois, organized every year in August by the Bournazel Tourist Office. Located on the Place du Foirail, in the heart of this Aveyronnais village dominated by one of the most remarkable Renaissance castles in southern France, this friendly event brings together bargain hunters, families, and locals in an exceptional heritage setting. From 8 am to 5:30 pm, visitors stroll among the stalls of individuals looking for bargains, enjoying the warm atmosphere of a village of character with stone houses topped with slate.
Every summer, the village of Bournazel hosts its annual car boot sale on the Place du Foirail, an esplanade shaded by century-old plane trees that forms the beating heart of local life. Organized by the Bournazel Tourist Office, this popular event brings together private sellers and bargain hunters in a setting of rare beauty: the golden stone houses with slate roofs line the square, dominated by the majestic silhouette of the Château de Bournazel, a listed Historic Monument.
Bournazel, a small village of about 350 inhabitants nestled in the Pays Rignacois, 7 kilometers from Rignac, is famous far beyond the Aveyron region thanks to its Renaissance castle. Built between 1540 and 1560 by Jean II de Buisson and Charlotte de Mancip, this castle is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Renaissance architecture in southern France. Its richly sculpted facades, inspired by the Italian styles popular under François I, bear witness to exceptional artistic refinement. The castle today houses a museum of paintings, furniture, and art objects from the 16th and 17th centuries, while its remarkable gardens, awarded a label since 2018, are among the few Renaissance gardens preserved in France.
On the Place du Foirail and in the adjacent alleys, the stalls of the Bournazel car boot sale offer a wide range of items: crockery and pottery, books and magazines, clothing and accessories, toys and games, tools and garden equipment, knick-knacks and decorative objects, antique furniture, and vinyl records. The diversity of items presented reflects the richness of the attics and cellars of this Aveyronnais countryside, offering bargain hunters the opportunity to find authentic pieces at attractive prices.
The Bournazel car boot sale is part of the tradition of popular events that liven up the villages of Rouergue during the summer season. The event takes place from 8 am to 5:30 pm, giving visitors time to browse the stalls, negotiate with sellers, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the village. The proximity of the castle and its gardens, open for visits from April to mid-November, allows for combining the pleasure of bargain hunting with cultural discovery in a single day.
Bournazel is an ideal starting point for discovering the riches of the Pays Rignacois. The village offers several marked hiking trails, including the Chemin de la Boriette and the Chemin des Dames, which wind through a landscape of green hills with views of the Cantal mountains. Nearby, the Étang de Cavaignac, the largest private pond in Rouergue with its 22 hectares, and the medieval village of Belcastel, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, complete a remarkable tourist offer. The church of Saint-Sébastien in Bournazel, classified as a Historic Monument in January 2023, is also worth a visit.
Individuals wishing to book a spot at the Bournazel car boot sale can contact the Tourist Office by phone or email. Reservations are recommended to secure a good spot. Entry is free for visitors, and parking is available on the outskirts of the village.
