Bargain hunting for books, records and art objects at the gates of Albi
In Saint-Juéry, a working-class commune on the Tarn riverbank east of Albi, a flea market with a decidedly cultural tone is held. Unlike general flea markets, this event focuses on books, vinyl records, sheet music, CDs, DVDs, comics, posters, old papers, videos and art objects. A must for second-hand culture enthusiasts in the Albigeois basin.
The Saint-Juéry cultural flea market has the particularity of being thematic: exhibitors focus on objects with cultural content. Old or recent books, paperback novels, beautiful art books, comics, manga, encyclopaedias, 33 and 45 rpm records, CDs, cassettes, DVDs, Blu-Rays, video games, sheet music, old musical instruments, movie posters, photographs, paintings and engravings make up the majority of stalls. For hunters tired of flea markets dominated by clothing and tableware, it's a goldmine.
A commune of 6,700 inhabitants adjacent to Albi on the north bank of the Tarn, Saint-Juéry is a former stronghold of the southwestern metallurgical industry. The Saut du Tarn steelworks, which supported generations of workers until the 1980s, left the town with a rich industrial heritage visible at the Saut du Tarn Museum. This workers' memory has nourished a particularly dynamic associative and cultural life.
The flea market attracts a select audience: comic collectors, bibliophiles, audiophiles searching for rare vinyls, cinephiles, music lovers, art history enthusiasts. Faithful Saint-Juéry locals mingle with bargain hunters from the Albigeois, Carmausin and sometimes Aveyron. Some exhibitors are occasional booksellers and record dealers.
After hunting, Albi's proximity (5 km) allows you to extend the cultural day with a visit to Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum or the Berbie Palace. The Saut du Tarn site in Saint-Juéry, with its spectacular industrial remains by the river, is also worth a detour.
