Browsing in Avignon's most beautiful medieval street, along the Sorgue
Browsing on Rue des Teinturiers is a unique experience. This medieval street, bordered by the open-air Sorgue canal and punctuated by still-turning water wheels, has been classified since 1932 as a 'natural, artistic, historic, legendary or picturesque' site. Today it is Avignon's bohemian heart, with café terraces, Off Festival theatres, independent bookshops and craft boutiques. Once a year, this iconic street becomes the setting for a small-scale vide-grenier run by around 30 private sellers.
From the 14th to 19th centuries, Rue des Teinturiers was the heart of Avignon's textile industry. Twenty-three water wheels once powered mills and silk factories. Four remain today, giving the street its nickname 'street of wheels'.
Unlike large brocantes, the Teinturiers vide-grenier stays deliberately small — around 30 exhibitors, all private. This intimacy is its charm.
