About Carmes Flea Market Avignon

Every Sunday morning, Place des Carmes comes alive with Avignon's flea market. At the foot of the Carmes cloister and Saint-Symphorien church, around thirty antique dealers and private sellers display antique furniture, Provençal crockery, old books, vinyl records and bric-a-brac. A historic market in the heart of the north-east district within the ramparts.

A historic flea market in the heart of Avignon

Every Sunday morning from 8am to 1pm, Place des Carmes transforms into one of the most charming flea markets in Provence. Nestled in the north-east district of the city of the popes, between the ramparts and the historic centre, this triangular square owes its name to the former Carmes convent established here in the 14th century. Until the 1950s, the square housed a covered market, partially dismantled today and replaced by the movable stalls of Sunday antique dealers.

An exceptional heritage setting

Browsers stroll under the gaze of Saint-Symphorien church, just steps from the Carmes cloister, a major venue of the Avignon Festival since 1967. The cobbled, plane-tree-lined square preserves a Provençal village atmosphere within the bustling city centre. During the French Revolution, it was briefly renamed Place de la Liberté.

What you will find

About thirty exhibitors, both professionals and private sellers, set up every Sunday. Treasures range from 18th and 19th century Provençal furniture to paintings, Moustiers porcelain, Biot glassware, antique linen, santons (Provençal figurines), Avignon postcards, vinyl records, comics and old paper. Collectors regularly discover antique farming tools, oil lamps, jewellery and collector watches.

Authentic Provençal atmosphere

The atmosphere is typically Mediterranean: friendly bargaining, sidewalk cafés, occasional Provençal language exchanges. During summer and the Avignon Festival (July), attendance rises and additional stallholders join the regulars.

Carmes Flea Market Avignon — edition 2026

The Puces de la Place des Carmes resume their weekly rhythm in 2026: every Sunday morning from 8am to 1pm, year-round. Around thirty antique dealers and private sellers gather at the foot of the historic cloister, offering antique furniture, Provençal crockery, books, vinyl and curiosities. The 2026 edition is expected to see particularly strong attendance during the Avignon Festival in July.
