Bargain hunting on the Maures coast
Le Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer, a small seaside commune between the Maures and the Mediterranean, is one of the discreet jewels of the Var coast. On a small surface spread spectacular panoramas, secret coves and one of France's most famous botanical gardens : the Domaine du Rayol, by Gilles Clément, devoted to world Mediterranean-climate plants.
Unlike bigger events in more populous communes, Rayol-Canadel stays human-sized, mirroring the village (about 700 year-round residents, several thousand in season). Modesty is its quality : family mood, friendliness, direct exchange, time to negotiate.
Mostly private sellers : clothing, toys, books, tableware, bric-a-brac, small furniture, baby gear, beach and holiday kit. The seaside shows in nautical décor, summer linen, small decorative items rotated through holidays.
Combine with the commune's discovery. The Domaine du Rayol deserves hours : gardens gather Mediterranean flora from Chile, California, South Africa, Australia and the Mediterranean itself. Rayol beach, Canadel bay, coastal paths toward Cavalaire or Le Lavandou, Hyères islands views extend the day.
Early in high season. Limited parking, use signed solutions. Cash. Combine with the Domaine du Rayol and a swim.
