Grand Pentecost car boot sale and flea market with a carriage parade in the medieval bastide of Villeneuve-d'Aveyron
The Pentecost Car Boot Sale of Villeneuve is one of the unmissable events of spring in Aveyron. Every year on Pentecost Sunday, the medieval bastide of Villeneuve-d'Aveyron (12260) hosts a large car boot sale and flea market around the town walls, accompanied by a spectacular parade of 1900s carriages with costumed re-enactors. This event brings together between 100 and 200 exhibitors, both individuals and professionals, along the streets and squares of this 13th-century fortified town, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France since 2024. Street entertainment, refreshments, and food stalls complete this festive day in an exceptional heritage setting in Rouergue.
On Pentecost Sunday, the medieval bastide of Villeneuve-d'Aveyron transforms into a vast open-air treasure hunting market. The Pentecost Car Boot Sale takes over the town walls, with 100 to 200 exhibitors displaying their goods along the streets, squares, and ramparts of this fortified town founded in the 13th century by Count Raymond VII of Toulouse. Individuals and professionals offer a rich and varied selection for treasure hunters: antique tableware, trinkets, clothing, toys, books, vinyl records, small furniture, tools, vintage items, and curiosities of all kinds. Admission is free for visitors, making this day an accessible family outing for everyone.
The unique feature of this car boot sale is the parade of 1900s carriages organized by the Cavaliers du Rouergue. Period horse-drawn carriages travel through the streets of Villeneuve, accompanied by re-enactors in Belle Époque costumes who bring the cobbled alleys of the bastide to life. This equestrian and historical spectacle offers a striking journey back in time, blending the atmosphere of a traditional flea market with the elegance of early 20th-century coaches. Street entertainment, refreshments, and on-site catering complete the festive atmosphere of this Pentecost day.
Classified among The Most Beautiful Villages of France since September 2024, Villeneuve-d'Aveyron is the eleventh village in Aveyron to receive this prestigious label. The bastide preserves a remarkable fortified ensemble: nearly 800 meters of 13th-century ramparts punctuated by about fifteen round and square towers, the Cardalhac and Soubirane gate towers, and a network of medieval alleys organized around the Place des Conques. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a unique architectural gem in France, juxtaposes a Romanesque Greek cross section from the late 11th century and a mid-13th-century southern Gothic nave. This exceptional heritage provides an incomparable setting for open-air treasure hunting.
The Pentecost Car Boot Sale is part of a rich calendar of events in Villeneuve-d'Aveyron, which also hosts an April car boot sale at the foirail, a summer car boot sale in August, and the famous flea market during the medieval festival in July. The Pentecost edition, with its carriage parade and costumed entertainment, is the most unique event in Villeneuve's flea market calendar. The exhibitor fee is set at 3 euros per linear meter, with vehicles parked behind the stand. Located about ten kilometers north of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, at the crossroads of the Quercy and Rouergue routes, Villeneuve attracts treasure hunters and visitors from all over the Villefranchois region and beyond for this occasion.
