Annual flea market on the foirail square of Claunhac in Salles-Courbatiès, Aveyron
Since 1988, the Foire aux Puces de Claunhac has animated the place du foirail of this hamlet in the commune of Salles-Courbatiès, Aveyron, every year. Organized by the Association des Parents d'Élèves (APE), this event has stood the test of time to become a must-see for bargain hunters in western Aveyron. The local press calls it an "exceptional fair" that attracts an increasing number of stalls and visitors each year.
The market takes place outdoors on the foirail square, the traditional site for village fairs and markets. From 9 a.m., the aisles come alive and the stalls reveal their treasures: antique objects, tableware, trinkets, furniture, clothing, books, toys, and curiosities of all kinds. Exhibitors, who set up from 6:30 a.m., welcome the early morning bargain hunters before the midday rush. The market continues until 6 p.m., offering a full day of treasure hunting and strolling.
The hamlet of Claunhac is located two kilometers north of the village of Salles-Courbatiès, on the banks of the Diège, a small river in Aveyron. This rural locality, nestled in a hilly landscape characteristic of western Aveyron, retains an authentic charm that gives the flea market a special atmosphere, far from large urban events. The commune of Salles-Courbatiès, which includes the villages of Salles-Courbatiès and Claunhac, has about 400 inhabitants and is located halfway between Figeac and Villefranche-de-Rouergue, two historic bastides in Aveyron and Lot.
The Claunhac foirail square, traditionally dedicated to agricultural fairs, transforms for a day into a vast open-air flea market. This bucolic setting, lined with local stone buildings, adds a rare heritage and landscape dimension to the pleasure of bargain hunting. Visitors come as much for the bargains as to enjoy the rural atmosphere and the conviviality typical of small Aveyronnais villages.
The diversity of goods offered is one of the main attractions of this village flea market. Private and professional exhibitors mingle in the foirail square, offering a wide range of items:
The modest price of €11 for 10 m² for an exhibitor spot encourages wide participation from both private individuals and professionals, and ensures a renewal of offerings from one edition to the next.
Beyond bargain hunting, the Foire aux Puces de Claunhac is distinguished by its festive and family atmosphere. A food and drink area is available on-site, allowing visitors to refresh themselves between finds. Activities punctuate the day, including face painting for children and stalls selling artisanal Italian ice cream, making the event an enjoyable outing for the whole family. Entry is free for all visitors, contributing to the accessibility and popularity of this village fair.
Driven by the dynamism of the APE of Salles-Courbatiès, the Foire aux Puces de Claunhac exemplifies the associative vitality of small rural communes in Aveyron. This annual event, deeply rooted in local life for nearly four decades, demonstrates the inhabitants' attachment to their regional heritage and their ability to bring together visitors and exhibitors for a moment of sharing and conviviality.
