Grand flea market and sabot fair celebrating the heritage of the clog makers of Thiérache
The Brocante and Sabot Fair of Buironfosse is an emblematic event of the Aisne Thiérache region, held every first Sunday of May. Organized by the Amicale du Musée du Sabot, this fair celebrates the heritage of the clog makers of Buironfosse, a village that had up to 360 master clog makers in 1880 and produced 150,000 pairs of clogs per year before the First World War. In 2026, it will be its 41st edition.
Every first Sunday of May, Buironfosse, a village of over 1,000 inhabitants in Thiérache, hosts its famous Brocante and Sabot Fair. Organized by the Amicale du Musée du Sabot, this event perpetuates the memory of a village that was a major center of French clog making. In 1880, Buironfosse had 360 master clog makers, and before the First World War, production reached 150,000 pairs of clogs per year.
The fair combines a large flea market open to amateurs and professionals from 8 a.m., and a craft fair showcasing the clog makers' know-how. The Musée du Sabot (Clog Museum), located in the village, offers demonstrations of clog making and guided tours. Flea market vendors set up on the Place de la République and in the adjacent streets for a varied display.
In 2026, the Sabot Fair will celebrate its 41st edition, demonstrating the attachment of the Buironnais people to their artisanal heritage. This event is covered by the local press, notably La Thiérache and L'Observateur de l'Avesnois, and attracts visitors from all over French and Belgian Thiérache. The event contributes to the cultural and tourist influence of this rural area of the Aisne.
