Annual car boot sale in the historic center of Peynier, a Provençal village at the foot of the Regagnas massif
The Peynier Car Boot Sale is an annual event organized by the Peynier Fêtes association in the heart of the historic center of this charming Provençal village in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Every first Sunday of June, the picturesque streets of old Peynier — Cours Albéric Laurent, Rue Basse, Place des Savonniers, Rue des Ormeaux, and Place Yves Dollo — transform into a vast open-air market where individuals and families come to hunt for treasures in a friendly atmosphere. Nestled between Trets and Fuveau, at the foot of the Regagnas massif and facing the Sainte-Victoire mountain, Peynier offers a remarkable heritage setting for this day of discoveries and bargains.
Every year at the beginning of June, the village of Peynier hosts its annual car boot sale, organized by the Peynier Fêtes association. This popular event takes over the streets and squares of the historic center, offering treasure hunters the chance to browse stalls and discover everyday items, trinkets, clothing, and forgotten treasures. Entry is free for all visitors.
Strolling through the stalls of the Peynier car boot sale is also an opportunity to discover remarkable architectural heritage. The village was built around its 16th-century castle, recognizable by its two large round towers flanking the main facade, built by the Matheron family during the Renaissance. The Saint-Julien church, a 12th-century Romanesque-Gothic construction with its characteristic rounded bell tower, has watched over the village for nearly nine hundred years. Slightly apart, the Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens chapel, a magnificent Romanesque building listed as a Historic Monument, overlooks a promontory facing Sainte-Victoire. The covered passages, old houses, and monumental dovecotes — including the famous Ferrage dovecote, built on four pillars — complete this authentic setting.
The Peynier car boot sale brings together a wide variety of items offered by individuals: Provençal tableware and ceramics, books and comics, clothing and accessories, toys and board games, tools and gardening equipment, furniture and decorative objects. Flea market enthusiasts appreciate the quality of the finds and the relaxed atmosphere of this human-sized village, where bargaining is part of the fun.
Beyond the treasure hunting, the Peynier car boot sale offers musical entertainment that accompanies visitors throughout the day. A food and drink area allows you to refresh and eat between finds, in the warm and friendly atmosphere that characterizes the events of this Provençal village in the upper Arc valley.
Located about twenty kilometers southeast of Aix-en-Provence, Peynier has about 3,700 inhabitants. The village is nestled in the upper Arc valley, between the Regagnas massif, which peaks at 497 meters to the south, and the famous Montagne Sainte-Victoire to the north. Once a fiefdom of the viscounts of Marseille and then of the Abbey of Saint-Victor, Peynier has retained its medieval character with its narrow streets, its restored 16th-century facades, and its fountains. The historical birthplace of the Marseille soap makers, the village derives its name from the Latin "podium nigrum" — the "black well" — referring to the visible lignite deposits on its hills.
The Peynier Car Boot Sale is held on the first Sunday of June, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Access is free for visitors. Exhibitors wishing to book a spot should contact the Peynier Fêtes association in advance of the event. It is advisable to arrive early in the morning to take advantage of the best deals and the pleasant setting of the historic center before the midday heat.
The Peynier Car Boot Sale returns on Sunday, June 1st, 2026, in the historic center of the village, between the Renaissance castle and the Romanesque church. Organized by the Peynier Fêtes association, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., free entry.
