May Day flea market and garage sale in the heart of the historic village of Chailly-en-Bière, on the edge of Fontainebleau forest
The Chailly-en-Bière flea market and garage sale is an eagerly awaited May Day event in southern Seine-et-Marne. Organized by the Comité des loisirs on Place du Général Leclerc and around the town hall, it brings together individuals, flea market vendors, and families from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., in a village steeped in history on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. Free parking, on-site catering: everything is designed to have a pleasant day in this high point of Barbizon school painting.
Every May 1st, and again on the last Sunday of September, the village of Chailly-en-Bière hosts one of the finest flea markets in southern Seine-et-Marne. Organized by the Chailly-en-Bière Leisure Committee, the event takes over Place du Général Leclerc and the area around the town hall, offering a setting that is both practical and heritage-rich. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., individual exhibitors and occasional flea market vendors welcome a large audience eager to bargain hunt, stroll, and enjoy a friendly day on the edge of the forest.
The Leisure Committee, a dynamic village association, takes particular care with the organization of its flea market: free parking available for visitors, on-site catering with refreshment and small food stands, warm welcome for exhibitors, good distribution of stalls... This quality of organization contributes to the good reputation of the event, which attracts a faithful and large audience every year, coming not only from neighboring towns but also from Paris and nearby Essonne.
Chailly-en-Bière is much more than just a Seine-et-Marne village: it is a high point in the history of French painting. Located on the northern edge of the Fontainebleau forest, a few kilometers from Barbizon, Chailly welcomed in the 19th century many painters of the Barbizon school, including Jean-François Millet, who stayed there and painted some of his most famous works. The village church and its cemetery also house Millet's grave, making Chailly a place of pilgrimage for art lovers. This exceptional artistic dimension gives all the charm to a visit to the town.
The flea market offers a wide range of items, meeting the expectations of both beginner bargain hunters and seasoned collectors: dishware and porcelain, vintage clothing, antique toys and games, books and comics, vinyl records and CDs, postcards, small furniture, lamps, decorative items, trinkets, and curiosities. The simultaneous presence of individuals emptying their attics and occasional flea market vendors offers a great diversity of prices and quality, allowing everyone to find what they're looking for.
The immediate proximity of the Fontainebleau forest is a major asset for visitors. After a morning of bargain hunting, many extend their day with a walk in one of the most beautiful forests in Europe: the Barbizon trails, the legendary climbing rocks, the landscapes immortalized by 19th-century painters... A few kilometers away, the Château de Fontainebleau, a UNESCO-listed royal residence, also offers an essential visit. Not to mention the charming village of Barbizon with its historic inns and art galleries.
A popular feature: the Chailly-en-Bière flea market is held twice a year, on May 1st and the last Sunday of September. This allows loyal bargain hunters to return twice a year and enjoy an event in each season, with the mild spring weather in May and the autumn colors in September. An organization to be commended and a real bonus for local life.
