Annual community garage sale on Avenue Gallieni, on the edge of Fontainebleau Forest
The Bois-le-Roi garage sale is one of the must-attend events of the back-to-school season in Seine-et-Marne. Organized by the town on Avenue Gallieni, between the train station and Rue Pasteur, it gathers nearly 200 exhibitors each year, mostly local residents from the Pays de Fontainebleau area. A friendly day in the heart of a village bordered by the Seine river and the Fontainebleau forest, where bargain hunters and strollers mingle in a family-friendly atmosphere.
Every year in September, the town of Bois-le-Roi organizes its major garage sale on Avenue Gallieni, between the SNCF train station and Rue Pasteur. This event has become a true local institution, drawing large crowds eager to hunt for bargains in a friendly atmosphere. With nearly 200 exhibitors set up along the avenue, it's the perfect opportunity to find a great deal, a retro item, or a small Sunday treasure.
Organized directly by the Town of Bois-le-Roi, the garage sale is open as a priority to Bacotins (residents of Bois-le-Roi) and then, if spaces remain, to residents of the Pays de Fontainebleau agglomeration. This local organization guarantees a human-scale event, where exhibitors are largely individuals truly emptying their attics. You'll find everything from children's clothing and toys, dishware, books, records, small furniture, decorative items, knickknacks, and various curiosities.
Bois-le-Roi is both a residential and tourist village, nestled between the Seine and the Fontainebleau forest. Its name recalls the ancient royal hunts that took place in these prestigious woods. Today, the town attracts a wealthy population of nature lovers, drawn by its direct train line to Paris and its exceptional living environment. The village inspired many painters from the Barbizon school and retains an authentic charm with its holiday villas and peaceful Seine riverbanks.
The garage sale runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., always in a relaxed atmosphere. Visitors enjoy the mild late summer weather to wander from stand to stand, exchange a few words with exhibitors, negotiate gently, and leave with their finds. Many take the opportunity to extend their visit with a walk along the Seine, a stop at the leisure base, or a forest stroll. Local shops and café terraces also benefit from the influx of visitors.
Avenue Gallieni is easily accessible on foot from the Bois-le-Roi train station, served by direct trains from Paris-Gare de Lyon in less than 35 minutes. This accessibility makes the garage sale a very busy event, where Parisians and locals mix in great conviviality. Admission is free for visitors.
