The great May 1st bargain hunt in the Somme
Le Roi de la Broc' is the great May 1st bargain-hunting rendezvous in Albert, Somme. Held at the Les Caraïbes locality, this brocante gathers around a hundred individual and professional exhibitors in a popular and festive format. A highlight of the Picard calendar, opening the great réderie season of the Albert country, in the Somme battlefield region.
Some events mark the start of the bargain-hunting season. In the Somme, May 1st is traditionally a day of réderies: Le Roi de la Broc' is well established in Albert's local calendar, gathering around a hundred exhibitors at Les Caraïbes.
Albert is a Somme sub-prefecture. Marked forever by World War I — the 1916 Battle of the Somme had its epicentre here —, the town was rebuilt between the wars. Its Notre-Dame-de-Brebières basilica with its famous "Leaning Virgin" is iconic. Today Albert combines memorial heritage (memorials, British cemeteries, Somme 1916 Museum) with lively local life.
The locality name — Les Caraïbes — is one of this event's charms. Contrasting with deep Picardy, it evokes sun and islands. Beyond the wink, the site offers ample space for a hundred exhibitors.
Held on Labour Day, traditionally a holiday suited for family outings, the brocante attracts significant footfall. Bargain hunters from the Albert country, Amiens and nearby communes come for first seasonal finds. Cheerful atmosphere, on-site refreshments, occasional music.
Great diversity: antique and contemporary furniture, crockery, glassware, porcelain, old books and comics, vinyls, toys, vintage clothing, postcards, advertising objects, militaria (a Picard specialty given the region's past), knick-knacks, decor, tools, garden equipment.
Combine bargain hunting with the Somme 1916 Museum in the old town tunnels, the Notre-Dame-de-Brebières basilica, and nearby memorials (Thiepval, Beaumont-Hamel, Pozières).
