What is an estate sale?

The estate sale (or "vide-maison" in French) is a particular form of sale that differs from the traditional flea market. As its name suggests, it takes place at the sellers' own home, who open their house to visitors to sell all (or a large portion) of their belongings. This practice, common in English-speaking countries where it's called "garage sale" or "estate sale", is less widespread in France but is increasingly developing. It has a double advantage: for sellers, it's an effective way to quickly dispose of a large number of items (often during a move, inheritance or life change), and for buyers, it's an opportunity to access a coherent and sometimes exceptional selection of furniture and objects.

Three days to find it all

This Le Boulou estate sale takes place over three full days, from Friday April 24 to Sunday April 26, 2026, from 9:30am to 6:30pm. This extended duration allows visitors to take their time and return several times if needed. Sellers generally offer a wide range of items: furniture (wardrobes, dressers, tables, chairs, armchairs, sofas), small and large appliances, complete tableware, glasses, cutlery, household linens, decor, paintings, lamps, books, clothing, shoes, tools, gardening equipment and miscellaneous items. An intimate atmosphere and great deals

The experience of an estate sale is very different from that of a large public flea market. Here, the atmosphere is more intimate, exchanges more personal, and prices often very negotiable. Sellers know the history of their objects and can share it with visitors. Surprising discoveries are common: quality furniture pieces, old objects forgotten in the back of a closet, travel souvenirs, personal collections. For seasoned bargain hunters, this format allows finding rare gems at unbeatable prices, far from the hustle and bustle of large events.

Le Boulou is a commune of around 5,700 inhabitants located in the Tech valley, at the foot of the Alberes and in the immediate vicinity of the Spanish border. A historic crossroads between France and Spain, the town cultivates a strong Catalan identity with its traditions, language and festivities (Sant Jordi, spring festival). Le Boulou is also known for its thermal waters and its historic thermal resort, its religious heritage (12th-century Saint Mary's church with its remarkable Romanesque portal) and its active commercial fabric.
