Car boot sale, dance and fireworks in the birthplace of the Marquis de Lafayette
Every August, around August 16th, Chavaniac-Lafayette (43230) celebrates its Saint-Roch patronal festival with a full festive program: lively car boot sale in the village center, barbecue-fries, pétanque competition, popular dance and fireworks. An unmissable event organized by the festival committee in the birthplace of the famous Marquis de Lafayette.
Chavaniac-Lafayette is a village in Haute-Loire steeped in history: it was here, in the family castle overlooking the village, that the Marquis de Lafayette, hero of the American Revolution and friend of George Washington, was born in 1757. Every year, around August 16th, the village celebrates its Saint-Roch patronal festival with a program that blends rural tradition and popular festivity.
The car boot sale takes place in the village center, attracting exhibitors from the commune and surrounding areas. Pitches are offered at €1 per linear meter, a particularly accessible rate that encourages private participation. Setup begins early in the morning to allow for opening under the best conditions. The offerings cover a wide variety of items: antique furniture, crockery, clothing, books, tools, and various curiosities.
The Chavaniac-Lafayette patronal festival is not just about the flea market. The day is punctuated by numerous activities: barbecue-fries are served during the day to delight visitors, while the pétanque competition brings together players from all over the region in a sporting and friendly atmosphere. Children and adults alike find their joy in these activities that liven up the village throughout the day.
As night falls, the patronal festival takes on an even more festive dimension. A popular dance brings together residents and visitors on the dance floor, extending the festivities late into the evening. The highlight remains the fireworks, whose bursts illuminate the Lafayette castle in the background — a striking visual spectacle that unites the village's historical heritage with the festive celebration.
Visiting Chavaniac-Lafayette for its car boot sale also means discovering the Lafayette castle-museum, one of the key sites of Franco-American heritage in Auvergne. The Marquis's ancestral home, now a museum, opens its doors to visitors and retraces the life of this extraordinary figure. A village perched in the mountains of Haute-Loire, Chavaniac offers a magnificent natural setting and an authentic atmosphere that make this patronal festival an unforgettable moment.
