The historic SIDSV gathering in the legendary neighborhood of France's garden city
The Charmettes flea market is much more than a simple market. It is the work of the SIDSV, an association founded in 1911, one of the oldest in France dedicated to preserving urban and landscape heritage. Since its creation, the SIDSV has worked to protect this exceptional garden city, classified as a protected site, and organizes events throughout the year. The Charmettes flea market is one of its flagship gatherings.
Conceived in the mid-19th century by Count de Choulot and built under the Second Empire, Le Vésinet is France's first example of a garden city: a town entirely planned as a great garden, where streets wind between artificial lakes, streams, lawns and groves. Each house, often an ornate Belle Époque villa, sits in a green setting. Hunting for bargains in this exceptional décor gives the event a unique dimension: stands line shady paths beneath century-old trees, in the hushed atmosphere of a high-end residential neighborhood.
The Charmettes market square is one of the beating hearts of Le Vésinet. Every Saturday, it hosts one of the finest food markets in the Yvelines. On flea market day, it becomes a vast treasure-hunting space where resident sellers from Le Vésinet and neighboring towns offer books, clothes, toys, tableware, small furniture and family objects. The atmosphere is that of a neighborhood gathering where regulars meet year after year, in the typically Vésigondine spirit of conviviality.
The SIDSV offers preferential rates to its members (15 or 30 euros depending on stand size), and prioritizes spots for Le Vésinet and neighboring town residents. This policy keeps an atmosphere of proximity and quality far from commercial fairs. Registration is done online via HelloAsso, and spots fill quickly given the event's popularity. Proceeds support the association's heritage preservation work.
Before or after bargain hunting, visitors can extend their day discovering the wonders of Le Vésinet: the Lake of the Station with its swans, Sainte-Marguerite church and its Sainte-Chapelle-inspired spire, the Anglo-Norman and Italian villas for which the town is famous, or a walk along the Grande-Ceinture. This iconic event stands each year as a moment of celebration for a community deeply attached to its heritage.
