Spring car boot sale on the Larzac plateau, at the foot of the hospital tower of Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux in Aveyron
The Car boot sale of Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux is held every spring in this small hospitable village on the Larzac plateau, in Aveyron. At the foot of the majestic 15th-century tower, nicknamed the lighthouse of the Larzac, locals and visitors gather for a friendly day of treasure hunting where everyone is invited to sort through their belongings, empty their cupboards, and give their items a second life. In this hamlet of 88 inhabitants perched on the causse, the car boot sale takes on a special dimension, blending the authenticity of a Templar and Hospitaller village with the simplicity of an outdoor village event.
Every spring, the tiny village of Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux, nestled in the heart of the Larzac plateau in Aveyron, organizes its annual car boot sale. The event invites residents from the causse and surrounding valleys to sort through their cupboards and give their everyday items a second life. Under the benevolent gaze of the 30-meter high Hospitaller tower, stalls are set up in the village for a day of bargain hunting in an exceptional heritage setting.
Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux is one of the five Templar and Hospitaller sites of the Larzac, alongside Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon, La Cavalerie, La Couvertoirade, and Saint-Jean-d'Alcas. The village owes its fame to its spectacular fortified granary tower, built in 1430 at the request of the villagers who previously had to flee to Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon in case of danger. 30 meters high, this granary tower, the largest ever built in Aveyron, served as both a refuge and a storage for wheat harvests. From its summit, the panorama extends over the Causses and the Cévennes, a landscape classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site for Mediterranean agro-pastoralism.
With its 88 inhabitants, Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux offers a human-sized car boot sale, far from large commercial events. The spirit is resolutely friendly and family-oriented: everyone brings out their forgotten treasures to give them a new life. The stalls offer the typical items of rural car boot sales on the causse:
In April, the Larzac plateau slowly awakens from the long causse winter. The dry lawns of the causse turn green, wild orchids begin to appear, and Lacaune sheep flocks return to the pastures. It is in this spring atmosphere, under a often bright sky, that the car boot sale takes on its full flavor. The altitude of the causse, around 700 meters, guarantees fresh and pleasant air, ideal for strolling between the stalls.
Visitors to the car boot sale can take advantage of their visit to Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux to discover the Hospitaller tower and its permanent exhibitions dedicated to Roquefort cheese production, village life, and the history of religious orders. The Larzac Templar and Hospitaller circuit connects the five fortified sites of the plateau and offers a remarkable historical hike. A few kilometers away, Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon and La Couvertoirade are also worth a visit for their perfectly preserved medieval ramparts.
