Late-May bargain hunting in the heart of historic Vouillé
On Sunday 31 May 2026, Vouillé holds a flea market in its town centre, a historic Haut-Poitou town famous for the Battle of Vouillé in 507. 18 km west of Poitiers, this event gathers private sellers and bargain hunters in the streets of the centre. Free entry, lively atmosphere in a bustling town of 3,600 inhabitants.
Vouillé is a town of about 3,600 inhabitants in the Haut-Poitou area, located around 20 km west of Poitiers on the road to Parthenay. Vouillé is written into the history books: in 507, Clovis defeated Alaric II, king of the Visigoths, at the famous Battle of Vouillé — a major episode in the building of the Frankish kingdom. On Sunday 31 May 2026, a flea market is held in the town centre, distinct from the Traversonne event held on 8 May.
This town-centre format takes over the streets and squares of historic Vouillé. The choice of location, rather than a car park or an outlying field, gives the event a special feel: bargain hunters circulate among old houses, local shops, Saint-Hilaire church, in a lively village atmosphere. Exhibitors — mainly private sellers from the town and surrounding area — unpack from early morning.
Beyond its 6th-century military past, Vouillé is today a lively canton capital, with local shops, a Friday weekly market, schools, a lower-secondary, and dense community life. Saint-Hilaire church, a witness of Poitevin Romanesque art, and a few fine town-centre houses give the town its heritage character. The commune is part of the Haut-Poitou intermunicipal community, which gathers towns around Neuville-de-Poitou, Mirebeau and Vouillé.
The Haut-Poitou region is known for its AOC vineyard (Haut-Poitou), its bocage plains, and its Romanesque heritage. Nearby: Latillé (10 min), Ayron (15 min), Neuville-de-Poitou with its wine cellars, Mirebeau. Poitiers — historic capital of Poitou with its 1431 university and the Notre-Dame-la-Grande facade — is 25 minutes away by car or via the D6.
After the flea market, fine outings are possible. Wine tasting in the Haut-Poitou cellars. Visit Monts-sur-Guesnes castle to the north, or the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay to the south-west. Poitiers for its Romanesque churches, Futuroscope (20 min), museums. The Brenne Regional Natural Park is not far for nature lovers.
Arrive in the morning (8-9am) for the best selection. Park in the side streets of the centre. Bring small change, a strong bag and comfortable shoes. Town hall: +33 5 49 54 20 30.
