Every May 8th, the town of Lavelanet celebrates Victory Day in its own way: by organizing the grand Vide-Greniers du Lavelanet'hon, one of the most important flea market events in the Pays d'Olmes and the Ariège foothills of the Pyrenees. Lavelanet is the most populous commune in the Pays d'Olmes, a natural and historical sub-region in eastern Ariège, at the junction of the first Pyrenean ranges and Languedoc. An industrial town long known for its textile industries (draperies, wool manufacturing), Lavelanet is today a commune of some 7,000 inhabitants that radiates over its hinterland — Montségur, Comus, Bélesta, Laroque-d'Olmes — and maintains close ties with the Ariège towns of Foix and Pamiers. Its lively town center, diverse shops, and cultural facilities make it the active heart of the Pays d'Olmes.

With nineteen editions under its belt, the Vide-Greniers du Lavelanet'hon has built a solid organization and a reputation that extends far beyond the department's borders. Over the years, the organizers have refined the management of pitches, signage, exhibitor reception, and event communication. Every May 8th, the streets and squares of Lavelanet's center are covered with stalls offering a wide range of items: furniture and decoration, clothing and accessories, toys and games, books and vinyl records, tableware and table arts, tools, and various equipment.
