Flea market and car boot sale in the heart of the Viadène plateau, in North Aveyron
The Vide-Grenier de Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence is a summer event organized by the cultural service of the municipality of Argences-en-Aubrac, in the heart of the Viadène plateau, in the north of Aveyron. Every summer, the center of this village perched at 800 meters altitude comes alive for a festive day combining flea market, car boot sale, arts and crafts, and local producers' market. The Rue du Riols and the Place du Cambon host professional and private exhibitors, all benefiting from free pitches. Not far from the spectacular Saut du Chien waterfall and the Truyère gorges, Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence offers an exceptional natural setting for a day of treasure hunting and Aveyronnaise conviviality.
Every summer, the village of Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence, a delegated commune of Argences-en-Aubrac, organizes its traditional flea market and car boot sale day. Orchestrated by the cultural service of the municipality, this popular event takes over the Rue du Riols and the Place du Cambon, transforming the village center into a vast open-air market where bargain hunters, antique dealers, and families mingle, enjoying a warm and authentic atmosphere.
Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence is located at about 800 meters altitude, on the green Viadène plateau, facing the Cantal mountains and the foothills of Aubrac. This region in northern Aveyron is characterized by grandiose landscapes: the Gorges de la Truyère, once nicknamed the "devil's gorges", the Sarrans dam and its lake popular with fishermen, and the spectacular Saut du Chien waterfall, one of the most vertiginous in Aveyron, where the waters of the Plane stream cascade down a granite chaos towards the Truyère.
The day is not limited to the flea market and car boot sale. It also hosts an arts and crafts market and a local producers' market, allowing visitors to discover local know-how and Aveyronnais terroir specialties. Among the items offered on the stalls of the antique dealers: antiques, small furniture, books, crockery, art objects, and curiosities from all eras. Pitches are completely free, for both professionals and individuals.
Aveyronnais gastronomy sets the rhythm for the car boot sale day. From 8 am, early risers can enjoy tripous, an emblematic specialty of Rouergue. At 12:30 pm, a convivial meal offers the traditional aligot-saucisse, a must-have dish from Aubrac. In the evening, at 8:30 pm, the firefighters close the day in style with a giant aligot, a festive and unifying moment that brings together locals and visitors around this legendary dish.
The village holds notable historical heritage: a church with the remains of a previous building and a chapel dedicated to the Lords of Thénières, an ornamental cross from the 14th century, as well as a moving war memorial sculpted by Eugène Arsal, representing a shepherd and his dog mourning his father's grave, counted among the thirty most beautiful monuments in France. The neighboring hamlet of Orlhaguet, nicknamed the "Nice of the mountains" for its mild climate, houses a fortified church from the 14th century and sculpted crosses from the 15th-16th centuries characteristic of the Argence territory.
The car boot sale takes place from 8 am to 9 pm in the center of Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence. Entry is free for visitors. Registration is mandatory for exhibitors and can be done by email with the cultural service. The village is easily accessible from Rodez (about 50 km north) and is an ideal starting point for hikes to the Saut du Chien waterfall or the Truyère gorges.
