Annual car boot sale in the heart of the Ariège valley
The Mercus-Garrabet car boot sale is held every year in May and November in the town's multi-purpose hall. Organized by the local festival committee, this event brings together individuals and bargain hunters in this Ariège commune of 1,200 inhabitants, nestled between the Ariège river and the first Pyrenean foothills. Exhibitors offer furniture, crockery, clothing, toys, and objects of all kinds in a friendly atmosphere typical of village car boot sales.
Mercus-Garrabet is a commune in Ariège located about ten kilometers south of Foix, in the Ariège valley. This territory with an evocative name — Mercus is said to come from an altar dedicated to Mercury, the god of commerce — hosts its car boot sale twice a year, in spring and autumn. The event takes place in the commune's multi-purpose hall and the adjoining square, allowing about fifty exhibitors to gather in a preserved Pyrenean setting.
Mercus-Garrabet comprises three main hamlets — Mercus, Garrabet, and Amplaing — as well as two smaller hamlets, Jarnat and Croquié. The commune covers nearly 1,500 hectares, from the banks of the Ariège river to peaks reaching 1,600 meters in altitude. The Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge), a medieval structure with two arches from the 13th century, is one of the most remarkable testaments to the local heritage. This fortified bridge served as a toll and allowed travelers to avoid a long detour via Foix or Tarascon-sur-Ariège.
The spring car boot sale, usually held in May, marks the resumption of outdoor activities after winter. The November one, often scheduled around November 11th, offers residents the opportunity to clear out their attics before the year-end holidays. Both editions welcome individuals and amateur flea market sellers offering furniture, crockery, books, clothing, toys, tools, and trinkets. Entry is free for visitors, and pitches are available at a modest price — 5 euros for approximately 2 linear meters.
The commune borders the Lac de Béthmale regional nature reserve and is in close proximity to the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Natural Park. The Mercus forest, marked hiking trails, and the beaches of the Ariège river make it a popular place to stay. Visitors to the car boot sale can extend their day with a walk along the river or a visit to the Cathar castle of Calamès, overlooking the opposite side of the valley.
Registration is with the festival committee or the town hall of Mercus-Garrabet. Exhibitors must arrive by 7:00 AM for setup. Tables and racks are not provided. Entry is free for visitors, who are invited to browse the stalls from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
