Every spring, the village of Surba hosts its annual car boot sale in the village square. This friendly event, supported by local associations, brings together sellers and visitors in an exceptional mountain setting. Surba, a municipality in the Ariège valley, benefits from a prime geographical location just a few minutes from Tarascon-sur-Ariège and its many prehistoric and Cathar sites.
Surba is a rural commune in Ariège (09400) located in the canton of Tarascon-sur-Ariège, in the heart of the Sabarthès. The village clings to a slope overlooking the Ariège valley, offering unobstructed views of the Pyrenean chain and the surrounding limestone massifs. Immediately nearby are the neighboring villages of Mercus-Garrabet and Arignac, as well as the Niaux cave, whose Magdalenian paintings, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, attract thousands of visitors each year.
The terroir of Surba is characterized by oak and beech forests, hay meadows, and vegetable gardens maintained by the inhabitants. Village life maintains a rhythm determined by the seasons and traditions, of which the spring car boot sale is one of the highlights.
The Surba car boot sale primarily brings together private sellers from the village and surrounding villages in the Sabarthès. The items offered reflect the daily life of Ariège homes: farm furniture — sideboards, chests of drawers, tables, and chairs —, old crockery, kitchen utensils, gardening tools and agricultural tools, books and magazines, children's and adult clothing, old toys, vinyl records, trinkets, and decorative objects. Prices remain modest, in the spirit of a popular car boot sale that allows everyone to give a second life to objects they no longer use.
Surba's location in the Ariège Sabarthès makes it an ideal starting point for discovering the region's riches. The Niaux cave, a few kilometers away, preserves one of the most complete collections of prehistoric paintings in Europe. The Prehistory Park in Tarascon-sur-Ariège offers an immersion into the techniques of prehistoric humans. For hiking enthusiasts, the GR10 trails and routes to the Ariège summer pastures start from the valley floor.
The Surba car boot sale takes place on the village square, accessible from Tarascon-sur-Ariège via the D8. Entry is free for visitors. Seller registration is handled by the local organizing associations. Further information is available from the Surba town hall.
