Car boot sale twice a year, Place Saléon-Terras, organized by the Comité des fêtes du Cheylard
The Vide Grenier du Cheylard is held twice a year on Place Saléon-Terras, in the heart of this Ardèche town in the Eyrieux valley. Organized by the Comité des fêtes du Cheylard, it brings together about fifty private and professional exhibitors each spring (May) and each summer (August 15th). Free entry, open from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.
In the heart of the Val'Eyrieux, the Vide Grenier du Cheylard is one of the unmissable flea market events in the north of Ardèche des Boutières. Organized twice a year by the Comité des fêtes du Cheylard, it takes over the Place Saléon-Terras, the town's central square, to offer bargain hunters and families a great day of discoveries and good deals.
The first event takes place each spring, in May, and the second each summer, on August 15th, the day of the traditional Assumption Day feast that traditionally livens up Ardèche villages. These two dates punctuate Le Cheylard's festive season and are part of a broader program of events run all year round by the Comité des fêtes.
At each edition, around 50 exhibitors — individuals wanting to clear out their attics and occasional flea market sellers — set up on Place Saléon-Terras. The stalls offer a wide variety of items: antique furniture, crockery and tableware, clothing and textiles, books, vinyl records, and collectibles, vintage toys, tools and garden equipment, knick-knacks and curiosities from Ardèche attics.
Visitors can arrive from 8:30 am and browse until 6:00 pm, leaving plenty of time to explore the stalls at a leisurely pace. Entry is free for visitors, contributing to the event's popular and family-friendly atmosphere.
Le Cheylard is a commune of about 2,800 inhabitants, the capital of the canton of Le Cheylard, nestled at the confluence of the Dorne and the Eyrieux rivers in the Ardèche Boutières region. A former medieval town, it was one of the main markets and fairgrounds in Vivarais during the Middle Ages, and developed in the 19th century thanks to the leather (tannery) and textile industries.
The town retains a rich architectural heritage: the Romanesque church, the Château de la Chèze (13th century) offering a remarkable panorama, as well as a historic town center with houses featuring carved lintels and mullioned windows, recognized for its quality of life and floral displays. Place Saléon-Terras, which hosts the car boot sale, is one of the emblematic squares of the town.
The Comité des fêtes du Cheylard is the essential organizing association for the town's festive life. Throughout the year, it offers a variety of events: New Year's Eve, Easter egg hunt, concerts, participation in the Ardéchoise cycling event, music festival, flea markets, game sessions, cabaret, and Christmas market. The biannual car boot sale is one of its flagship events, appreciated by the residents of Le Cheylard and the surrounding villages.
The association can be followed on its Facebook page and has a dedicated website. For exhibitors wishing to participate, it is advisable to contact the Comité des fêtes to find out about registration procedures and stall fees.
The day of the car boot sale is also an opportunity to discover Le Cheylard and its surroundings. The Eyrieux valley offers numerous possibilities for hiking and outdoor sports. The Gorges de l'Eyrieux trail, the panoramas from the Château de la Chèze, and the perched villages nearby such as Désaignes or Lamastre are all invitations to extend the day in this preserved natural setting.
