Every second Sunday of August, the village of Lachamp-Raphaël hosts its annual car boot sale, organized by the association Les Chemins Retrouvés. Nicknamed the “Vide-Grenier des Chamiers”, this summer event is a well-established tradition in the local life of this Ardèche village located on the high volcanic plateaus, at an altitude that makes it one of the highest villages in the department.
The event allows residents to clear out their attics and acquire various and unusual items from exhibitors in the village and neighboring communes. Individuals and occasional sellers offer a wide variety of goods: furniture and antique objects, clothing and accessories, tableware, books and magazines, toys, tools and utensils, trinkets, and decoration. The diversity of goods, often very different from those found in urban flea markets, reflects the rural authenticity of this Ardèche territory.
Entry is free for visitors. Exhibitors wishing to participate in the car boot sale should contact the organizing association or the town hall of Lachamp-Raphaël to find out about registration conditions and available spaces. Exhibitors' arrival with their vehicles is scheduled early in the morning before opening to the public, to allow for orderly setup and clearing of vehicles to welcome visitors in good conditions.
Lachamp-Raphaël is a commune in the Ardèche (department 07, postal code 07530) located on the high volcanic plateaus of the Mézenc massif, at an altitude of around 1,100 meters. This village of character, nestled in an open landscape of high-altitude meadows and fir forests, enjoys an exceptional natural environment on the borders of Ardèche, Loire, and Haute-Loire.
The territory of Lachamp-Raphaël is marked by the remarkable volcanic geology of the Ardèche plateaus: basalt dykes, basalt columns, high-altitude peat bogs, and protected wetlands constitute a rich natural heritage. The commune is part of the Regional Natural Park of the Monts d'Ardèche, which protects this exceptional landscape. The summit of Mont Mézenc (1,753 m), the highest point in the region, is accessible by hiking from the village.
Lachamp-Raphaël is a popular destination for hikers and lovers of wild nature. The Loire River originates in the Mézenc massif, not far from the village. The landscapes of wide-open spaces, peat bogs, mountain pastures, and coniferous forests form a unique natural palette, very different from the Mediterranean landscapes of the lower Ardèche. In summer, the coolness of the high plateaus attracts many visitors seeking fresh air and nature.
The association Les Chemins Retrouvés is a local structure that works to animate and support the life of Lachamp-Raphaël. It is responsible for organizing the annual car boot sale, which is one of the highlights of the village's summer social life. The preparation of this event mobilizes the association's volunteers and is part of the tradition of popular events that maintain social ties in rural Ardèche villages.
The Vide-Grenier des Chamiers helps to liven up the village during the summer season, at a time when Lachamp-Raphaël welcomes many holidaymakers and hikers. It also provides an opportunity for permanent residents and second-home owners to come together around a friendly activity combining exchanges, discoveries, and good cheer.
For exhibitors wishing to participate, it is recommended to contact the association Les Chemins Retrouvés or the town hall of Lachamp-Raphaël (Place Pierre Dumond, 07530 Lachamp-Raphaël – tel. 04 75 38 78 86) to find out about registration procedures and available spaces. Exhibitors arrive with their vehicles between 7 am and 8 am for setup, and must remove their vehicles before opening to the public at 8 am. Departure is not permitted before the official closing of the event.
For visitors, entry is free. Arriving early in the morning allows you to find the best bargains. Bring cash for purchases from individual exhibitors. The cool temperatures of the high plateaus, even in August, suggest bringing a light jacket for the morning. The village has catering and a refreshment stand to sustain participants.
The car boot sale day in Lachamp-Raphaël can be combined with exploring the exceptional surroundings. The ascent to Mont Mézenc rewards with a 360° panorama of the Alps, the Massif Central, the Cévennes, and, on a clear day, the Mediterranean. The Lac d'Issarlès, a volcanic lake with clear waters, is about twenty kilometers away for a summer swim. The Route des Sucs allows you to connect several emblematic volcanic peaks in the area. The village of Monastier-sur-Gazeille, in Haute-Loire, is within driving distance for those who wish to discover the birthplace of the Loire River.
The Vide-Grenier des Chamiers of Lachamp-Raphaël will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2026 (2nd Sunday of August), organized by the association Les Chemins Retrouvés (07530). Free entry for visitors.
