Village car boot sale with vintage vehicle parade, in the heart of the Aveyron region overlooking the Rance valley
The Vide-Grenier de Plaisance is an annual event organized by the Association Plaisance Loisirs in the streets of this small village in southern Aveyron, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the three meanders of the Rance river. Traditionally scheduled for the second Sunday in September, this friendly event attracts bargain hunters and families from all over the Réquista canton. The car boot sale is accompanied by a parade of vintage cars and agricultural machinery, recalling the commune's wine-growing and rural past. Plaisance, gateway to the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park and the Rance valley, is home to the 12th-century Romanesque Saint-Martin church, a listed Historic Monument, whose octagonal bell tower watches over the valley like a sentinel. Food and drink are available on site, provided by the association's volunteers.
Every September, the Association Plaisance Loisirs takes over the village streets to organize a car boot sale that has become a highlight of local life. In this small village of around 200 inhabitants, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking three meanders of the Rance river, exhibitors' stalls line the stone alleyways, offering visitors a picturesque setting for a day of outdoor bargain hunting.
Plaisance occupies a remarkable position at the gateway to the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park, 12 kilometers southeast of Réquista. The village is dominated by its heritage gem, the 12th-century Romanesque Saint-Martin church, listed as a Historic Monument since 1929. This building, combining southern Romanesque architecture for the choir and transept with Gothic style for the nave, is distinguished by its octagonal bell tower visible from afar in the valley. Its sculpted capitals, notably depicting Daniel in the lions' den, bear witness to the exquisite Romanesque art. At the entrance to the church, a 15th-century cross of the Knights Hospitaller of Jerusalem, adorned with fleurs-de-lis and the Maltese cross, recalls the former commandery of Saint-Laurent.
At the entrance to the village, a monumental 18th-century lever press made of oak and chestnut bears witness to Plaisance's wine-growing past. Until the 20th century, the terraces on the southwest-facing slopes of the Rance valley were covered with vines, and this agricultural heritage is reflected in the village's identity. The parade of vintage cars and agricultural machinery accompanying the car boot sale perpetuates this rural memory, offering visitors a colorful spectacle in the village streets.
The Plaisance car boot sale offers the typical diversity of rural flea markets in Aveyron: crockery and kitchenware, books and magazines, clothing and accessories, children's toys, DIY tools, and decorative knick-knacks. Stall space is available for €5 for 6 meters, an affordable price that encourages locals from the canton to clear out their attics and garages. Savvy bargain hunters know they need to arrive early in the morning to spot the best deals before enjoying the rest of the day strolling through the village.
The Association Plaisance Loisirs, recognized for its constant commitment to animating the village, provides food and drink throughout the day thanks to its volunteers. The car boot sale is regularly accompanied by exhibitions, such as "Bruits de Comptoirs" (Sounds of the Counter), and the traditional vintage vehicle parade, which give this day a festive dimension that goes beyond a simple flea market. Plaisance, which also hosts the "Plais'T!val" music festival in July and the Saint-Martin village festival in November, cultivates a warm and welcoming village spirit all year round.
The Vide-Grenier de Plaisance returns on Thursday, September 10, 2026, in the village streets, Route de Coupiac. Free entry, vintage vehicle parade, on-site food and drinks.
