Charitable car boot sale in the heart of the Gorges du Tarn, organized by the Marie Rouanet school of Rivière-sur-Tarn in Aveyron
The Car boot sale of the Marie Rouanet School is a friendly event organized each year by the parents of pupils from the public school of Rivière-sur-Tarn. All profits are donated to fund school and extracurricular activities: educational trips, shows, creative workshops, and educational projects throughout the year. It is a moment of sharing and solidarity, where each purchase directly contributes to the well-being of the village's schoolchildren.
Rivière-sur-Tarn is the first village in Aveyron built on the plain, on the banks of the Tarn, at the entrance to the famous Gorges du Tarn. Nestled in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional des Grands Causses, this village of about 1,000 inhabitants benefits from a mild and sunny microclimate, between the imposing cliffs of the Causse Noir to the south and the Causse de Sauveterre to the north. The commune has remarkable heritage: the Château de Peyrelade, a medieval fortress from the 12th century perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley, the semi-troglodyte cellars of Entre-Deux-Monts, former 18th-century wine cellars carved into the rock, and the Cave de Peyrelade, producer of Bleu des Causses since 1856.
The exhibitors, mainly individuals, offer a wide variety of items on their stalls: clothes and shoes for the whole family, toys and board games, books and comics, crockery and decorative objects, small furniture, nursery equipment, and many other finds at low prices. The car boot sale is open from 7 a.m., allowing early birds to grab the best deals. A refreshment stand and catering are provided on-site by the association's volunteers.
The Rivière-sur-Tarn school is named after Marie Rouanet (1936-2026), an Occitan writer, poet, and singer born in Béziers. Author of over forty works combining poetry, ethnography, and novels, she was a major figure in Occitan culture. Living in Camarès in Aveyron with her husband, the poet Yves Rouquette, she dedicated her life to the defense and illustration of the language and traditions of southern France. This patronage gives the school and its events a special cultural dimension, rooted in the deep identity of the Aveyron region.
The Car boot sale of the Marie Rouanet School offers visitors much more than just a flea market: it is an opportunity to discover a village with exceptional heritage, the gateway to the Gorges du Tarn. Outdoor enthusiasts can extend their visit with a hike on the causses trails, a canoe trip down the Tarn, or a visit to the spectacular Château de Peyrelade. The magnificent natural setting, between turquoise waters and limestone cliffs, makes this day of bargain hunting a unique experience in Aveyron.
