A day of bargain hunting by the Agout, at the foot of the collegiate church
Every year in June, the village of Burlats holds its flea market on Quai Adélaïde, along the peaceful banks of the Agout. At the foot of the Adélaïde pavilion and the Saint-Pierre priory, this Sunday event organised by the festivities committee draws residents from the Castres basin and lovers of pleasant getaways into the Sidobre. The perfect chance to browse quietly by the water, then discover this little historic gem at the gateway to the Montagne Noire.
Burlats is no ordinary village. Once the seat of an important Benedictine priory, the commune has preserved an exceptionally rich heritage: the Saint-Pierre collegiate church (11th-12th centuries), the Adélaïde pavilion — which gave its name to the quay where the flea market is held — and the remains of the old ramparts. It is in this history-laden setting, beside the Agout, that exhibitors set up their pitches each June.
Quai Adélaïde runs alongside the river and offers a shaded, airy space, perfect for wandering. Private sellers and a few professionals offer clothing, toys, crockery, comics, records, small furniture, antique trinkets and everyday items. The event stays modest in size, which is part of its charm: you have time to chat with sellers, no one jostles you and you browse in a relaxed Sunday atmosphere.
The event is also an excellent excuse to explore the Sidobre, a granite massif unique in France, famous for its spectacular rocks (Peyro Clabado, the Three Cheeses, the river of rocks) and its forests. Burlats lies precisely at the meeting point of the Castres plain and the start of this granite plateau, about ten kilometres from Castres. Hikers will find many waymarked paths nearby, especially along the Agout gorges.
The Burlats Festivities Committee runs the event with a team of volunteers. Beyond the friendly vibe, the flea market helps keep the association alive and fund other village activities throughout the year. A refreshment stand and light snacks round out the set-up, letting visitors spend the full day on site.
Come in the morning: the atmosphere is livelier and the stalls best stocked. The shade of the quayside trees makes browsing pleasant even in hot weather. While you're there, visit the Saint-Pierre collegiate church, head on to the nearby Roquecourbe castle or extend your afternoon with a hike among the Sidobre boulders.
