Annual car boot sale in the youngest commune of Bouches-du-Rhône, founded by repatriates from North Africa
The Vide-Grenier de Carnoux-en-Provence is an annual event organized on May 1st in this commune with a unique destiny, nestled between Aubagne and Cassis. Carnoux-en-Provence, the youngest commune in the department, was created in 1966 by decree of Prime Minister Georges Pompidou to welcome French repatriates from North Africa. This car boot sale brings together the inhabitants of this city born of exile for a day of friendly bargain hunting, in a Provençal setting marked by memory and community solidarity.
Each year, on May 1st, the commune of Carnoux-en-Provence organizes its annual car boot sale, a popular event that brings together the inhabitants of this atypical town in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Individuals take over the aisles to offer bargain hunters a varied selection of everyday items, souvenirs, and affordable finds, in a friendly and family atmosphere.
The history of Carnoux-en-Provence is unique in France. It all began on March 24, 1957, when entrepreneurs Prophète and Cabanieu founded the Coopérative Immobilière Française in Casablanca to rehouse French people from Morocco after the end of the protectorate in 1956. They acquired 419 hectares in a valley between Aubagne and Cassis. In 1962, the massive arrival of repatriates from Algeria transformed the hamlet: the population grew from 242 permanent residents to over 1,200 inhabitants in 1963. On August 26, 1966, Prime Minister Georges Pompidou officially decreed the creation of the commune, the 119th in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. To this day, Carnoux-en-Provence remains a unique case: a city created ex nihilo through private initiative and self-financing.
The heritage of Carnoux-en-Provence bears witness to its singular origins. The Notre-Dame d'Afrique church, built in March 1966, houses a statue of the Black Madonna, a replica of the one in the Notre-Dame d'Afrique basilica in Algiers. The Place du Maréchal-Lyautey hosts the Notre-Dame d'Afrique pilgrimage every August 15th, a major gathering of repatriated populations organized since 1963. The communal cemetery has a monumental arch containing samples of earth from all the former French colonies. These places of memory give the car boot sale a special dimension: bargain hunting in Carnoux also means exploring the history of these families from North Africa who built a community from scratch.
Located just 3.9 km from Aubagne and 5.1 km from Cassis, Carnoux-en-Provence occupies a prime position in the Provençal landscape. Perched between 181 and 382 meters above sea level over an area of 3.5 km², this small commune of about 6,800 inhabitants offers a pleasant setting for an outdoor bargain hunting day. The car boot sale stalls offer the usual variety of Provençal flea markets: crockery and pottery, books and vinyl records, clothing and accessories, toys and board games, knick-knacks and decorative objects, small furniture, and sometimes souvenirs from North Africa that tell the unique story of this commune.
The choice of May 1st for the car boot sale is not accidental. This public holiday allows all residents and visitors from neighboring communes to enjoy a day of relaxation and bargain hunting without work constraints. At this time of year, the Provençal climate is particularly mild, with pleasant temperatures and generous sunshine that invite strolls among the stalls. The car boot sale is part of the tradition of popular events that mark the life of this young and dynamic commune, where the spirit of solidarity inherited from its founders remains vibrant.
The Vide-Grenier de Carnoux-en-Provence takes place on May 1st in the town center. Entry is free for visitors. It is advisable to arrive early in the morning to find the best treasures, as the most discerning bargain hunters are present from the opening of the stalls. The commune has free parking near the center.
