A big flea market in the Tarn mountains

Nestled between the Monts de Lacaune and the Sidobre, in the Gijou valley, Vabre is a characterful village in the south-east of the Tarn with the feel of a small mountain town. Long a Cévennes and Protestant land, Vabre has also left its mark on history through its role as a refuge during the Second World War, notably with the Vabre maquis that gave its name to the central square. It's in this heritage-rich setting that the commune's big summer flea market is held every 14 August.

A day of bargain hunting across three sites

The flea market spreads over a generous perimeter: the Place du Maquis, the rue Célina Marc that extends from it, and the area around the community hall. This layout accommodates a very large number of exhibitors and offers several atmospheres: the lively heart of the square, the more intimate adjoining streets and the airier community-hall zone. Finds include crockery, clothes, toys, books, comics, records, trinkets, furniture, tools, vintage decor, baby items, sports goods and a few fine pieces of rural brocante.

A very popular summer rendezvous

14 August, on the eve of a public holiday, draws holidaymakers from the Tarn mountains and residents of nearby valleys. Visitors come from Castres, Lacaune, Roquecourbe, Viane and Brassac, as well as from nearby campsites and cottages. The vibe is that of a big popular summer rendezvous: tempered heat at altitude, village music, good cheer and plenty of finds. Exhibitors set up early in the morning to enjoy the crowds before the sun grows too strong.

Extending the day in the Gijou valley

Vabre is an ideal starting point to explore the natural and heritage treasures of the region: swimming and fishing in the Gijou, hikes in the Monts de Lacaune, a visit to the Sidobre and its spectacular granite chaos, perched villages, farmhouse inns and local specialities (Lacaune cured meats, sheep's cheese, charcuterie). The 14 August flea market thus becomes the gateway to a full day in the green, in one of the most beautiful regions of the southern Tarn.
