Solidarity street sale by Secours Populaire, 4 rue du Commandant Bachellerie, Châteaubriant
Every year in April, the Châteaubriant branch of Secours Populaire Français opens the doors of its street sale at 4 rue du Commandant Bachellerie. This solidarity event offers residents of Châteaubriant and the Pays de la Mée clothes, books, toys, and other second-hand items at very low prices, accessible to all budgets. A day of street sale that combines a circular economy and human solidarity.
Founded in 1945, Secours Populaire Français is one of France's leading humanitarian organizations. Present in nearly 800 towns and villages, it provides material, social, and cultural assistance to people in need, regardless of their origin, religion, or status. The Châteaubriant section, like all local branches, relies on a network of committed volunteers who collect, sort, and redistribute donations throughout the year. The annual street sale is one of the most visible manifestations of this activity.
Rue du Commandant Bachellerie, in the center of Châteaubriant, houses the local Secours Populaire premises. The name of this street pays tribute to an officer or resistance fighter who marked the city's history, thus perpetuating the memory of the men and women who contributed to the defense of republican values. It is in this symbolically charged place that Secours Populaire holds its solidarity street sale each year, extending the values of fraternity and humanism into the present.
The Secours Populaire street sale is distinguished from an ordinary car boot sale by the social purpose of its prices. All items offered are priced to remain accessible to people with modest incomes, who are the organization's priority audience. Clothes of all sizes, shoes, household linen, tableware, books, toys, and various everyday objects are offered in a spirit of generosity that characterizes the DNA of Secours Populaire.
Châteaubriant, a sub-prefecture of Loire-Atlantique, has a strong tradition of civic engagement and solidarity. Its history, particularly marked by the memory of the 27 hostages shot in 1941 in the Sablière quarries—including Guy Môquet—has forged a particular sensitivity to the values of fraternity and resistance in the collective consciousness. Secours Populaire, through its daily actions and its annual street sale, perpetuates this humanist heritage in service of the most vulnerable.
