Bargain hunting facing Mont Ventoux, on the lavender racetrack at 800 metres
Bargain hunting in Provence, yes, but bargain hunting at 800 metres altitude facing the Giant of Provence is quite unusual. Every 14 July, the Sault Horse-Racing Society turns the Défends racecourse, along the road to Saint-Trinit, into a vast flea market field. On the racing track and its surroundings, private sellers and small professionals empty cellars, attics and sheds under the sun of the Sault plateau.
The racecourse site offers a 360° view that many events envy. To the north, Mont Ventoux displays its stony slopes, to the south, the lavender fields of the Sault plateau stretch as far as the eye can see. In July, the lavender is just beginning its purple bloom.
The event attracts exhibitors from across Vaucluse and neighbouring Alpes-de-Haute-Provence: rustic tableware, Provençal linens, antique toys, books, farming tools, rustic furniture and regional figurines.
On 14 July, Sault celebrates in family style, and the flea market sets the rhythm of a day extended around a picnic on the track, a lavender ice cream on the Esplanade or a drive through the Nesque gorges.
